JUST. MOVE. TO. LINUX.

I don't get why people complain about windows when there's CLEARLY an alternative.

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 52 points 1 week ago (3 children)

It doesn't fit everyone's use case.

[–] Goodlucksil@lemmy.dbzer0.com 19 points 6 days ago

Perfect is the enemy of good. It fits most people's use case.

Then you will still find MAS useful.

As a Linux enjoyer, I agree with you but try not to sound so negative, it's off putting to normal folks.

The rabid amount of Linux fanboyism on Lemmy is quite off putting in general. Any conversation about Microsoft gets brigaded with “Just use Linux!” even if the conversation has nothing to do with it. It makes it a pain to have any decent discourse about things.

[–] crunchy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 6 days ago

Well yeah, people that are seeking out an open decentralized platform are more likely to not be fans of a closed centralized operating system.

[–] alsaaas@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 6 days ago

It's just that naturally on a libre Fediverse platform, people are gonna have higher tech literacy than the average populus.

Linux is enough for me personally, but some ppl use software like Photoshop so it's impossible unless they use winapps or something

As a Linux user: PLEASE. CUT. IT. OUT.

[–] somerandomperson@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

What's the alternative then? "dEbLoAtInG" Windows?

It's gonna get re-bloated again and again! And they will add more and more bullshit over time, annoying way more!

[–] Cevilia@lemmy.blahaj.zone 18 points 6 days ago (11 children)

No, the alternative is to realise you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.

Or Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024. That has less bloat in the first place.

Or MacOS. That might work better for the individual user's use case.

To a lot of people it's difficult. Vendor lock-in, support, cartels (the old kind) and familiarity are very important factors in choosing what you're going to use to compute things.

We should embrace the new ones and build things that they are going to use.

Virtual reality on my valve index is basically unplayable on Linux currently due to driver issues :(

[–] cepelinas@sopuli.xyz 4 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Yeah same for me with my rift cv1 the current driver altough better than before is still pretty bad in comparison to windows like 50fps at best and with other drivers it gets 28 fps.

[–] Kaijobu@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

What Linux are you using? I wanted to do the switch soon to either zorin or buzzite, but I would also like to keep using my valve index. Reading this here makes me reluctant to complete the switch.

[–] cepelinas@sopuli.xyz 2 points 5 days ago

I am using opensuse but it is hard to build monado or openhmd with it necause some packages you need to get from fedora because they dont exist or have a version tag with _SUSE which makes it not see that the package is there. I would recommend something more mainstream: Arch, fedora, debian and etc. But bazzite should work I think I succeefully ran my rift on it for a little bit.

I'll use what I want, when I want, how I want, where I want.

Who are you to demand otherwise? People like you are the reason other see Linux people as hostile neck beards.

[–] BluJay320@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 6 days ago (2 children)

I prefer a user-friendly interface, plus I regularly use VR with my Quest, which Linux does not like

[–] A_Chilean_Cyborg@feddit.cl 18 points 6 days ago (3 children)

There are legitimate reasons not to use Linux, but the user interface is not one of them, Linux can be way friendlier UI-wise than windows, see Desktops like cinnamon.

[–] Grass@sh.itjust.works 5 points 6 days ago (1 children)

if you want to be super cursed I've seen people replicate several of the windows UIs with desktop environment themes

[–] A_Chilean_Cyborg@feddit.cl 3 points 6 days ago

For sure, not hard to do, and even part of the fun (ricing).

[–] wurstgulasch3000@feddit.org 4 points 6 days ago (2 children)

I think VR might actually be a reason to still use windows unless something changed in the last two years

[–] A_Chilean_Cyborg@feddit.cl 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Yeah, that's what I have heard, but I'm talking about UI superiority.

[–] Benaaasaaas@group.lt 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

The only issue I have with my Index is that linux somehow prioritizes it over my main monitor when booting so i have to plug it in after booting and then all works fine.

[–] wurstgulasch3000@feddit.org 2 points 6 days ago

Index probably works fine but I don't know about non valve headsets

WiVRn from quest app store, wivrn desktop app. I also needed xrizer nightly for secondary gun mode to work in half life alyx. Can't guarantee much else though since I only really play beat saber.

Show me a Linux spreadsheet app that does tables, which I use every day.

what do you mean by tables?
