the first amendment protects you from the government.
It states you can speak publicly, or publish, disparaging things about the government (as long as its truthful - read not liable or slander) without fear of prosecution from the government.
It does not state you can say or do whatever you want without repercussions - like desecrating the flag.
That is entitlement. its a very different thing.
The flag is just an object. The only ones bound to treat it with respect by any laws are those who work for the government. the flag code does not apply to civilians. The flag should be treated with the same respect that our government treats us with.
It’s also an acceptable way to dispose of an unserviceable flag. As far as I’m concerned the government it represents is abhorrent enough to justify ceremonial disposition across the entire country.
