The last couple of days have been SO déjà vu it's enough to drive one to mutter to hell with it and go get several beer. Because I've seen this in about every North American movement since I was a kid with the adults on the line back in the 1950s.

Some things happen in every movement, no matter how well it starts. First, 'leaders' emerge, because most humans are followers and need leaders. Then the 'leaders' begin to like being leaders and rapidly come to view disagreement as a challenge to their power and an attack on the true nature of The Movement. At the same time, Ideologues begin questioning the intellectual and/or moral purity of The Movement (ideologues seem to think in Capitalisation). The non-violent are upset by the Bloc, the Bloc mocks the Kumbaya crowd (terminology of the 1990s), vegans attack meat eaters, then vegetarians, left leaners refuse to working with right leaners, Trots shoot down the crowd on the Odessa Steps and yadayadayada. People spend more time determining the most democratic way to make decisions than actually deciding. Soon groups spin off into little bubbles of purity and conspiracy, until the formerly powerful Movement is reduced to monthly meetings devoted to determining rules and the agenda for the next meeting.

And the capitalists/fascists/bosses win again.

Everyone, please, TAKE A DEEP BREATH! Decide for yourself whether it is more important to save the tattered shreds of your democracy or to be in charge, or morally correct, or have the most intellectually rigorous interpretation, or only co-operate with people who agree with you 100%, or....

Screw central structure, branding, trademarks and consensus: NO REVOLT WAS EVER WON THAT WAY! Look at what happened to BLM and Occupy Democrats. NO!

Whoever you are, wherever you are, turn to the person next to you and agree on the goals you share -- there will be time when that battle is won to fight over details. Work with the people in your community who share those goals to reach them, no matter what other stuff you have to set aside for now.

Then DO IT! It might be marching.or grafitti-ing slogans, or flooding your Congressperson's mailbox/phone/office plastering the town with posters, standing alone with a handmade sign.

Or maybe you are a member of the Black Bloc. That's your choice, and you can only be responsible for your choices, not your neighbour's. Support those who are working parallel to you, or in the same field, or for a cause that aligns with yours, even if it's not yours.

Because you ain't gonna win this any way but through mutual support and co-operation: that's the only way numbers grow overwhelming and revolts succeed.

Thanks for reading the old woman's rant. Be back later to see how thoroughly it's ignored.

Edit: teeny tiny typo.

I was just thinking that we should boycott fireworks this year. Don't even go watch them. I know they're fun, but we aren't independent anymore. Instead, we make it a fighting for independence, and make signs and hit the streets.

This is for Cheeto for violating the constitution and his oath to protect us from this instead of instrumenting it. Our chant has to be made as one and give a directive of what we want! Impeach, convict, remove!!!

With the movement kind of in shambles at the moment (we’ll be okay, purely because this is decentralized), we need to agree on the next day of movement. June 14th is a good day (Trump’s birthday/alleged military parade and Flag Day), but I feel we need another day before then.

I think Memorial Day/Memorial Day weekend is a good date, but I’d like some other ideas as well.

Get out, rise up

I've long been an advocate for a big tent approach. I don't have to agree with someone on everything to appreciate them for fighting the good fight, or trust them to have my back. At the demonstrations I've been to, I've seen people of many different political persuasions, and I'm proud to call them my allies. As far as I'm concerned, everyone from Bernie Sanders to Adam Kinzinger is my friend, at least until we manage to correct course.

That being said, there are some people we shouldn't let into our movement. We need to have standards. For starters, we don't need people who are anti-Trump not because he's authoritarian, but because he's not the right kind of authoritarian. We don't need tankies who are only against the Trump regime because its jackboots happen to be a color other than red. If Trump were to pay lip service to following the teachings of Karl Marx, I'm sure many of these people would suddenly go around wearing MAGA hats ("He was always one of us! Why else would his hats be red?"). The American Revolution is notable for the fact that it didn't replace one form of tyranny with another. Let's not make the mistake the Founders avoided.

We should also avoid dealing with the truly hateful. I'm sure there are some Archie Bunker types out there whose prejudices stem from ignorance rather than genuine malice, and who might change for the better with experience. Those people I might (and I must emphasize "might") be willing to work with, though if their views don't evolve, don't expect me to stay in contact with them. But for those who actively hate people just because they're different? No dice. I'm not going to work with people who oppose Trump for bigoted reasons, such as anti-Semites who hate Trump because they think he's a puppet of some sinister Jewish conspiracy. Nor am I going to work with people who voted for Trump because they wanted him to hurt groups of people they didn't like and have only started turning against him now because the leopards are feasting on their faces, such as TERFs who liked Trump's anti-trans stances and are only moving against him now because of how he's hurting the female gender. Now, if they sincerely renounce these hateful views, admit that they were wrong, and make an effort to change for the better? That makes things different. But the onus is on them to make that change. And if someone won't work with us to oust Trump because they hate some other group we're fighting for, they probably weren't worth trying to recruit to begin with. There are countless people from all over the political spectrum who don't have these prejudices, so why should we pander to the hateful bigots?

We should also be wary of people for other reasons. Some are just too out of touch with reality to be relied upon. Others are too difficult to work with. Still others are just plain terrible people. I've seen everyone from movement conservatives to anarcho-syndicalists at these demonstrations, and I welcome them if they act in good faith; we can work out our disagreements later. But having a tent big enough for everyone doesn't mean letting everyone in.
