Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must be legitimate questions. All post titles must include a question.

Rule 2- Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.

Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Questions which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts and joke questions.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-question posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

On fridays, you are allowed to post meme and troll questions, on the condition that it's in text format only, and conforms with our other rules. These posts MUST include the [NSQ Friday] tag in their title.

If you post a serious question on friday and are looking only for legitimate answers, then please include the [Serious] tag on your post. Irrelevant replies will then be removed by moderators.

Rule 7- You can't intentionally annoy, mock, or harass other members.

If you intentionally annoy, mock, harass, or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here. This includes using AI responses and summaries.

Obligation isn't a useful reference point here. Any party interested in communicating must make the effort to both understand and be understood.

As someone who was not allowed to learn Spanish as a child, or really second language, i say learn as many as you can.

You speak yours, they speak theirs. In the same conversation.

That's how a human learns a language. The more you converse, the more you will become fluent in each other's languages.

Inside is theirs, and you need to be less illiterate. Maybe do a course and put in time at home with mom.

Outside is yours. Maybe your mom needs to take a few more courses. If not just abide the rule.

Exceptions are when company clearly has a primary language.

This is a question built for me; my turkish has been deteriorating for 25+ years and I am trying to raise a bilingual (spanish/english) child.

When you speak to your mother, you should speak her language (I assume cantonese?) don't be afraid to mention words you lack in cantonese to her during the conversation so you can boost your vocabulary.

If you also have a child that's learning one language more than the other (because the primary language at school etc), communicate to them in your language, but understand what their needs are in their language, and reinforce it in your language (eg : Her : "Quiero agua" Me :"you want water? Ok, let's go get you water. Here's the water. Drink the water")

Personally I think the winning language is the language that’s most spoken in the country you both live in. I have been the family translator since I was 6 and I’m exhausted. My parents speak English but they don’t always get things and they’re insecure about it so they’ve always relied on me to translate. They’re also really bad with decision making because they’re afraid that they’ll misunderstand something. Throughout my life we’ve always had weird arguments because we don’t understand each other.

I felt this.

So many fucking letters, forms, I even had to do my parents tax forms...

even customer support calls

😭

my lexicon in my native language is not very vast

I'm just trying to think like a parent and that would be enough for me to encourage my rhetorical children to speak their native language more. The more languages you can communicate in and the better you get at it, the more ways you have of looking at the world and connecting to people.

This isn't to say I, the parent in this scenario, wouldn't be working to also learn the second language, but I'm not going to judge someone if they don't have the mental energy left to try to learn a new language after a hard day of work.

I dunno, just trying to think it through.
