From Charlie Barnett

"My favorite position is 68. She does me and I owe her one."

[–] mfed1122@discuss.tchncs.de 13 points 17 hours ago

69 is eternal, or at least as long as Arabic numerals remain in use. 67 does not replace 69, it lives alongside it. But 69 will outlast it. It was first referenced in 1790 https://www.dictionary.com/e/slang/69/ and will be repeatedly rediscovered by future generations

I think its whole thing is that it doesn't really mean anything; it's literally just an empty trigger word

[–] Souroak@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 6 hours ago

No soap radio.

[–] DarkAri@lemmy.blahaj.zone 22 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

I asked my nine year old daughter, and she said it doesn't mean anything, it's just brain rot to confuse the adults.

[–] ugo@feddit.it 4 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Joke’s on your daughter, I am already confused.

[–] DarkAri@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 16 hours ago

Knowing is half the battle.

[–] ZoteTheMighty@lemmy.zip 6 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

It originates from a discussion about a guy's height, he was 6 foot 7 inches. However, that's not really important to how it's used, it's just a mindless phrase to say.

[–] Soggy@lemmy.world 4 points 6 hours ago

It originates from "Doot Doot" by Skrilla [Dec '24], got associated with LaMelo Ball (basketball player), hijacked and force-memed by Taylen Kinney (basketball player, hand gesture starts here) [Jan '25], kids chasing highlight reel clout start doing this at games and Maverick Trevillian (the blonde kid in the memes) gets lucky [March '25]. Full-steam-ahead brainrot evolution from there, memes referencing memes with none of the original layers of context.

he was 6 foot 7 inches

So that is why it's not a thing in Europe.

[–] falseWhite@lemmy.world 11 points 23 hours ago

All the fun numbers were already taken by previous generations, so I guess they had to come up with something, even if it's completely meaningless

[–] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 8 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

67 is a near homophone to a curse word in cantonese:

碌柒 meaning dickhead

As a native Cantonese speaker, this will always be my official meaning for this

[–] Jolteon@lemmy.zip 3 points 5 hours ago

I'm gonna start spreading this around. It's much better than the existing definition.

[–] daggermoon@lemmy.world 2 points 59 minutes ago

You're one of my favorite Lemmy users.

[–] inkzombie@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 21 hours ago

Isn't the joke "because 7 8 9" older than both?

[–] MourningDove@lemmy.zip 5 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

If a joke relies on having no meaning to be funny, it’s neither a joke, or funny.

Jokes be subjective my man. What's funny to you is not to me and vice versa. So nonsense jokes exist, but you don't find them funny, doesn't mean it's not a joke, or funny to some. Whole web comics have been built on the premise. look up the white ninja. I find him hilarious.

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 4 points 19 hours ago

Gotta love 67. It’s so ubiquitous it’s become meaningless. From basketball to 67 kid, it’s pretty much whatever anyone wants it to be.

I don't get what the annoyance is with "6-7". I've been using it for years and it just means "approximately" or "thereabouts".

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 38 points 1 day ago

The way my kids use it, it doesn't mean anything. They just say it randomly in a drawn out voice.

[–] FishFace@piefed.social 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Can you use it in a sentence?

[–] NateNate60@lemmy.world 0 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

I cannot. You can only realise it's been used after it has already happened. I can try to think of a sentence all day but I will not come up with one because it can only come naturally.

Wait until we have six or seven votes on these comments and maybe then we can see

[–] Generica@lemmy.world 3 points 4 hours ago

Im so high i was like, who were the 67th and 69th presidents?

[–] Ziglin@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (5 children)

At least 67 isn't a sex thing.

[–] far_university1990@reddthat.com 52 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Not with that attitude >:)

[–] Ziglin@lemmy.world 3 points 19 hours ago

Fair enough.

[–] mannycalavera@feddit.uk 27 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Eww, sex! Get it away from me!

[–] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world 1 points 17 hours ago

if the people partaking in the sex jokes are about 6-7, yeah I want to keep myself away from it

[–] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 15 points 1 day ago

In cantonese 67 sounds like euphemism for dick.

[–] ZILtoid1991@lemmy.world 4 points 21 hours ago (1 children)
[–] Ziglin@lemmy.world 1 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

No, it just doesn't really appeal to me and many others which is why I would argue that something that is funny because it shouldn't be can easily be better than something that is funny because it's a sex thing. In this comparison I think I dislike both equally though.
