Said it during the meeting too...

They asked about both, he gave a long diplomatic answer for despot, trump laughed and said he'd been called worse.

Reporters doubled down and asked about fascist, and trump quickly interrupted to say "just say yes"

Mamdani didn't compromise at all, trump just loves him. Maybe he's so demented and racist he thinks Mamdani should get credit for SA's bribes?

The whole thing was wild.

[–] orclev@lemmy.world 76 points 2 days ago (8 children)

Yeah I don't understand this situation at all. One of my family members was speculating maybe Mamdani has some kind of blackmail or leverage over Trump. Maybe some property Trump still has in NYC? Either that or this is a rare instance where Trump realizes Mamdani is going to be good for NYC and that Trump's businesses in NYC will in turn benefit from that. I don't know, the whole thing is bizarre.

[–] witten@lemmy.world 88 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Copypasta of my comment from another thread: Trump has apparently just recently realized (as of the election results around the U.S.) that he's hugely unpopular and that it threatens his power / his grip on the Republicans. And that it stems in part from how he has ignored the affordability issue ever since he got elected.

Then someone like Mamdani waltzes into the picture and absolutely cleans up when running on affordability.. and not just "uh yeah I will totally lower the price of eggs" either. So Trump sees an opportunity to cozy up to this affordability guy in the hopes that some of the voter goodwill that Mamdani earned on that topic rubs off on Trump. He's desperate not to lose his grip on power.

tl;dr: Trump is trying to ride Mamdani's coattails.

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 3 points 3 hours ago

Trump is trying to ride Mamdani’s co

My mind completed that a totally different way.

[–] N0t_5ure@lemmy.world 29 points 2 days ago

This is exactly it. Trump is a malignant narcissist and views people and policy only in terms of how it affects him. Mamdani was a useful foil to scare people with while he was running for mayor ("look at the Democrats pushing Socialism!"), but now that he spanked the field, Trump sees the potential to score points by riding his coattails.

[–] oyo@lemmy.zip 2 points 5 hours ago

Yup. Trump has been saying the word "affordability" non stop since Mamdani started crushing the polls.

[–] snooggums@piefed.world 36 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Or Mamdani said something that was true but in a way that Trump took as a compliment because Trump thinks a lot of horrible things are positives.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 33 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yeah, like being a fascist despot

"and if you're a good little boy I might let you have a little sucky suck"

[–] Godort@lemmy.ca 30 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It's really not that complicated. There aren't any secret moving pieces.

Trump is a classic narcissist. As long as you're talking about him in a way that feels positive, he will like you and agree with most everything you have to say.

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago

Furthermore, NYC is filled with entitled narcissists, and any Mayor will need to know how to deal with them to get elected and successfully manage the city. So Mamdani has had a lot of practice lately.

[–] Grandwolf319@sh.itjust.works 26 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

Yeah I don't understand this situation at all.

It’s very simple, Trump core value is winning at all costs. He likes winners, and people who are popular.

Mamdani might be a Muslim but he does check off all other boxes:

He is well liked

Charismatic

Well spoken

Has a plan

People forget how much Trump liked Trudeau, inside he likes handsome, charismatic men.

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

inside he likes handsome, charismatic men.

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

[–] bobs_monkey@lemmy.zip 8 points 2 days ago

See: Bill Clinton

[–] curbstickle@anarchist.nexus 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

People forget how much Trump liked Trudeau, he likes handsome, charismatic men inside him

There we go, much better :)

And explains the looks he gives Mamdani!

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 5 points 2 days ago

"So much cuter than Bubba! 😍" - Trump looking at Mamdani.

[–] IronBird@lemmy.world 18 points 2 days ago

trump thinks everything is a show, its about ratings. he doesn't believe in anything...it's all just a game. think wrestling kafabe

mamdani knows trump is dumb as shit and easy to manipulate

[–] MelonYellow@lemmy.ca 18 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

I think Trump is simple and Mamdani’s just a hip down-to-earth likable dude lol

[–] HumanOnEarth@lemmy.ca 9 points 2 days ago

Yeah I lean towards this. That and Trump is a gigantic pussy and the epitome of "keyboard warrior" just like his cultists. He buckles under the weight of any person who is socially and morally functional.

[–] Bronzebeard@lemmy.zip 12 points 1 day ago

Trump is just so easily persuaded by anyone with a strong personality, and is such a clout chaser, he'll agree with whoever he last spoke to, and play shit up for cameras.

[–] SethTaylor@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

One thing Trump was happy about was Mamdani's intention to lower rent by building additional housing.

[–] fulcrummed@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago

Honestly, I’m just wondering if Trump is so accustomed to people bending the knee that when someone rocks up and tells him to his face that he’s nothing special, he becomes the sycophant because he needs everyone to love him. It’s not about the power. The abuse of power is largely about exercising the limits of his popularity to prove to himself he has worth and value. Seeing how far his own sycophants will stretch is his way of feeling meaningful and important, quite likely trying to prove that to his dead father. Kim Jong Il is his ideal. He could kill someone in the middle of Pyongyang Ave and no one would bat an eye.

It doesn’t hurt that Mamdani is the new fave son of the city Trump cannot win over no matter what he does, no matter what title he holds.

New York is a proxy for Trump’s dad. He’s always gonna be a disappointment to his father, and will go to his grave having never bathed in the glow of his father’s pride.

It’s quite the magic trick - Mamdani turned Trump into the world’s first Orange pander bear.

[–] turdcollector69@lemmy.world 8 points 11 hours ago

I think he's cozying up to Mamdani to piss other factions of the GOP off.

He may actually like him but I think there's an ulterior motive regarding social dynamics that we're just not privy to.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 hours ago

Trump loves Mamdani's political power in NY, and he knows this guy could make life difficult for him.

[–] manxu@piefed.social 94 points 2 days ago

The fawning was one-sided.

Trump behaved like Mamdani was his grandson about to take over the family business.

[–] mintiefresh@piefed.social 61 points 2 days ago

I mean Trump basically called himself a facist.

[–] Assassassin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 49 points 2 days ago

After meeting with local grass, Mamdani still believes grass is green.

[–] Flamekebab@piefed.social 45 points 2 days ago (1 children)

At least one US politician's brain works.

[–] OhStopYellingAtMe@lemmy.world 9 points 5 hours ago

Zohran Mamdani is correct.

[–] pwalshj@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

Forgot 'coward'.

[–] lechekaflan@lemmy.world 6 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago) (1 children)

It's one thing to say, it's an entirely different matter when actually acting on an idea.

We'll watch this chess game unfold.

Yeah, and that orange chucklefuck can go fuck himself.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 6 points 11 hours ago (3 children)

I'm not sure any game involving Trump could be considered chess.

[–] lechekaflan@lemmy.world 4 points 10 hours ago

I'm not underestimating the bastards behind Trump, as he's a puppet.

[–] TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world 3 points 8 hours ago

Trump is just in it for himself. He plays the game to gain power and wealth. Unlike other despots who still mind the state (like Stalin and Hitler), Trump doesn't care about the US.

[–] EchoCranium@lemmy.zip 2 points 4 hours ago

With most of the cards missing.

[–] Harvey656@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

This is the best headline.

[–] chemicalprophet@slrpnk.net 2 points 3 hours ago

He told you so!

[–] myfunnyaccountname@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 hour ago

Trump just gives great head. That’s why Mamdani left so happy.

[–] SabinStargem@lemmy.today 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Those words are Trump's love language.

🤮
