I had cuy there too! Though it was at a restaurant lol. I had them grilled, it was delicious. You just have to get over seeing them on a plate. I mean it’s not much different from seeing a cornish hen or something. It’s a trip when you go to someone’s house and they have guinea pigs, except they’re for food and not pets.

Yeah, it's the idea. One restaurant had them in cages around the side of the building. They were undoubtedly fresh, but I couldn't order it after seeing them.

Oh I view them as adorable pets too and know how that would be a bit difficult sight. I just make an effort to try the local dishes whenever traveling.

Except bugs. I really do not fuck with bugs lol.

Ah, childhood memories. When we went to this one relatives house, I never understood why my parents never let us play with the rabbits.

…. After I grew up, I had to wonder what that funny tasting “chicken” really was. Adult Me wants to know

And they often live off what is "biodegradable waste" for us. Imagine you standing in the kitchen prepping veg for dinner, and just dropping peels and outer leaves, carrot greens and cabbage stalks to the ground for the guinea pigs to eat.

That's basically what was historically done with pigs in large parts of Eurasia, but they also eat meat and bone

Except that the Guinea pigs usually live in the kitchen, something I can't see with pigs.

Is this supposed to be bad?

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

No, it is just how it is.

Rabbits are popular in Greece for this reason. My grandmother always made Stifado with rabbit. Its wonderful.

Do they also think we're strange? Keeping food as if they're pets?

[–] Acamon@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago

They do look a lot more like pigs once they're de-furred.

[–] winkly@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (2 children)

How do they get them so smooth and hairless?

Asking for a friend

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

What does it taste like? Gamey? Chicken?

[–] clay_pidgin@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 days ago

Like rabbit. It's fine but not worth the effort.

These are the cutest animals ever. F that

[–] FatVegan@leminal.space 8 points 1 day ago (3 children)

What animal isn't cute that humans eat?

[–] brsrklf@jlai.lu 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Fish are generally harder to relate to, especially compared to mammals. Lots of people eat anglerfish and... well to each their own but I'd say it's not easy on the eyes.

[–] FatVegan@leminal.space 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Do people eat anglerfish? Aren't they deep sea fish?

Fair point.

I was vegan as a health necessity for a few years. I still prefer eating veggies wherever possible, but when I'm living in someone else's home and have to adhere to someone else's diet, it's not always possible.
