If you don't, no need to reply telling me you don't. I live in the woods with some critters. I live pretty far from neighbors/police so having a gun gives me peace of mind. I also hunt and consider myself a gun hobbiest. I enjoy shooting targets, cleaning/organizing, reloading and earning food with guns.

I’ve been called the f word a few times since the election so I’m not going to become some homophobe’s victim

[–] Assassassin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

This. I'm not into violence, but the Republicans are getting scary and they have a lot of weapons. It'd be easier to reconcile my issues with violence if I had to shoot someone than it'd be to reconcile the issues I'd have if I wasn't able to fight them trying to hurt me or my family.

Plus target shooting is fun.

Good for you. Laws are nice, but sometimes firepower is the best option for securing your rights - especially if you live in a country where DEI is sneered at.

I like shooting as a sport. Not into hunting but hitting targets is fun.

[–] Badabinski@kbin.earth 9 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

That was my interest as well. I never liked the idea of hunting or using guns for self defense. I grew up target shooting, and it was great because it was a sport that a weak asthmatic kid with a flimsy ribcage could take part in. I don't really do it anymore because I got tired of being around other shooters and I don't really want to support the industry, but I miss it sometimes.

  1. A gun is useful tool for acquiring meat in a sustainable way. Shout out to venison!

  2. I am a trans woman. There are a lot of armed right wingers that would love to see me dead. They can try, but I’m not going to give them an easy time of it.

Hell yeah, we arm the dolls here

need? no need. want/have? I tinkered and shot target with my (now passed) stepfather and we bonded over the science and nerdy parts of it. do i carry? nope.

[–] nondescripthandle@lemmy.dbzer0.com 18 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Im American. All the people who think the laws were never meant to apply to them already have more guns than I have friends. And when they die, their likely rotten kids will get them. I can either accept that I live in a country where only terrible people have guns(this includes the cops). Or I could do something about it and take my sefety into my own hands. Really simple choice at the end of the day.

End of the world prep

I don't need or want guns the way the world is now.

But if society and civilization collapses, you'll need a gun because you'll need to protect yourself and your family from everyone else. I won't want it to attack other people, I'll just need it to survive every other murderous idiot that will want to kill me for a can of beans.

[–] the_q@lemmy.zip 9 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

I like how you assume you aren't a murderous idiot or at least not one in the eyes of someone else just like you

[–] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 9 points 21 hours ago (5 children)

If the world falls apart, my first plan of action is to just go into the wilderness and stay the hell out of everyone's way. I'm not joining any community or group anywhere. The gun will be there to keep anyone else that comes near to stay away.

When society breaks down, our greatest hope for survival will be each other .... unfortunately, our greatest danger will also be ourselves.

[–] NuXCOM_90Percent@lemmy.zip 10 points 21 hours ago (8 children)

You're not going to survive on your own. At best you'll burn through your personal supplies REAL fast and have no way to really grow more in time. More likely you won't even survive the first cold night.

Similarly, people also underestimate just how easy it is to sneak up on people. Unless you plan to have a 24/7 watch AND understand how to keep on lookout at night (it is deceptively hard because of how quickly your pupils will re-constrict with even a bit of light), you just need one halfway competent person with a rifle to end your life and take all your shit.

Same with the idea that "my gun is going to deter people". How are they going to know who does and doesn't have a gun? The Bad People who salivate over this are going to assume EVERYONE is armed because guessing wrong means getting shot. Just play any Battle Royale/Extraction Shooter to see that in action. And unless you set up a giant perimeter to let everyone know where you are and that you are armed, it is going to be any other chance encounter as people likely follow the same thought process you did when you staked out your cabin in the woods. And if you DO have a giant perimeter... then they KNOW you are armed and probably have good stuff.

Like almost all things gun nut: it is all about fantasizing about some REALLY horrible shit if you break it down.

[–] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 6 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Like the other responder said ... I'm Indigenous Canadian and my parents were born and raised in the wilderness. I grew up learning how to hunt, trap and fish to live off the land. It doesn't mean I'll be comfortable or happy about it ... it just means I'll be more capable of surviving. My extreme 'end of the world' plan (which I do hope never happens) .. is to just pack up my truck, fill up with gas, food, equipment, tools and firearms and head north into the wilderness until the road ends and then just start from there. Then abandon the truck and the road and head further into the wilderness. I know how to live on my own out there to build and manage my own shelter using traditional methods and I doubt many or any people will end up anywhere near me in far northern Ontario.

My parents and grandparents were into hunting and shooting sports, so I have always been around them and learned how to use them responsibly from an early age, so I used to think it was something everyone did.

I used to shoot 5-7 days a week. Ammo was dirt cheap so I have some guns that used to be really fun, but are now too expensive to use all that much, so I hunt one week a year and go skeet shooting a few times, and occasionally plink at targets with one of the 22s or 38 Specials that I have a pile of reloading stuff for.

It doesn't excite me as much as it used to either, as gun ownership has become more politicized for everyone, so it's also hard to find anyone I want to shoot with other than my brother. It used to be a fun hobby where people would just shoot the breeze more than the guns, but now clubs here are filled with MAGAs and plastered with Republican propaganda so I don't feel as welcome as I used to.

[–] kersploosh@sh.itjust.works 6 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

As a kid, my dad and I occasionally went to the local gun show just to look around at interesting stuff. The collectors selling antiques, fancy custom pieces, and guns with historical interest were always fun to chat with. But at some point it turned into crazy town. I don't go to those events anymore.

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 5 points 17 hours ago

I spend a lot more time watching Forgotten Weapons and C&Rsenal than I do shooting these days. Still get the mechanical bits and history stuff and they don't typically talk political stuff, which is probably good.

Karl of InRange does get political when I am in the mood for that, and he's a good guest occasionally on Behind the Bastards as well.

It would be nice if local clubs could be more like that, but at least there are a few avenues left.

[–] BurgerBaron@piefed.social 8 points 17 hours ago

I didn't ever want one until Trump threatened Canada and now I'm getting licenced. Just in case. That and winter survival training refresher. Hadn't done any of that since Scouts long ago.

I'd still die but maybe I last 20 minutes longer.

Firearms for defense are for eliminating an imminent threat. Over a year ago now, I estimated that an imminent threat of some kind was not out of the question. I didn't know exactly what then, but I could feel it in my bones. I live in a reasonably safe almost rural area; my estimation was based on the political climate. I am sad to say that I am only more certain now that I will need to eliminate an imminent threat at some point.

Although I didn't know what an imminent threat would look like, I felt it was important to have a firearm then because if you wait until you need a gun, it's way too late. I wanted to acquire, practice, make sure everything was working properly, practice, take classes, practice, get the right holster, practice, get comfortable, practice, stock up on ammo, and did I mention practice?

[–] cosmicrookie@lemmy.world 6 points 22 hours ago

I feel that the majority of the world doesn't get a voice in this, and it indirectly justifies having a gun.

Most of us do neither want, need or have a gun

I don’t have one, but I really appreciate the engineering and craftsmanship that goes into them. The way all of the subtle ergonomics play into an explosive force you aim with your hands. Being able to shoot at targets and quantify a skill on top of that is just icing on the cake.

I don’t think I could bring myself to shoot a living creature even if I needed to.

[–] DaleGribble88@programming.dev 6 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

I recently moved and got rid of mine. However, I used to live in a really rough neighborhood. A lot of heavy drug use. Most folks were good people when sober, but when high, they don't think logically, and bad mixes can cause aggression. Thankfully never had to shoot anyone, but police were called a few times with guns at the ready in case things escalated before police arrived. My mom still lives in that area, so I left her with a 38 special, a 20 guage shotgun, and a habit of calling the police the moment anything feels off in the neighborhood.

[–] ameancow@lemmy.world 5 points 11 hours ago

I carried a CCW for years and finally gave it up because it's a huge hassle to always have to be aware of. It's a presence that doesn't give me comfort, it made me always aware of its presence and that's not how I want to experience the world. I would go back to carrying if I move to a more rural area again with less chance of immediate response of emergency services or other people.

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 6 points 17 hours ago

Shooting clay pigeons on the farm is fun, and sometimes a pest needs taking care of.

I'm not straight and my neighborhood is low income. Like my neighbors and I are tight, but everyone has guns... i trust them (and they me), it's folks coming in from outside, especially shit like the Proud Boys who turned up a few years ago during protests.

Guns make the police in my area more polite. That was thing I witnessed following the Ukraine revolution as well. Marshal law is more costly on an armed unwilling population.

I also hunt as part of our wild life management where I live.

Its also something that as a maker I love to tinker and build stuff for. Just one of those because you can kind of things

[–] rockSlayer@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 22 hours ago

I own a few shotguns and a couple rifles. I used to go hunting, and guns are pretty cool. Now they just collect dust in my dad's safe since I don't have one. If I wanted to shoot again, I'd need to retake the safety course

[–] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 5 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Don't have guns yet, but kinda want them. I don't trust police, I'm non-white, fear of racists.

Hunting, self defense, sport, and just enjoy them.

Like all kinds of guns. Spring loaded German pellet rifles, handguns, PCCs, shotguns (pump/semi), rifles (.22, .243, .270, .308) both bolt action and semiautomatic.

Just like any other hobby with a utilitarian side… riding four wheelers and other motor vehicles is dangerous if you’re irresponsible, but they can be useful and are certainly fun.

Started out never wanting guns, but a family issue prompted it for safety reasons. Then, after taking a class and training, I found out I really enjoyed target shooting, even the wife got on board so we use it to bond.

I don't think I could ever enjoy hunting, unless it became necessary for survival for some reason. I'd like to have the extra funds to train and compete for the active shooting competitions (think the video of Reeves training from John Wick) but it's pretty pricey unless you have your own setup on some land.

Don't need, don't own, kinda want (because I like shooting), but I can't be arsed. Besides, I really should not pick up another expensive hobby. Plus I take firearm safety very seriously, and I don't have a practical way of keeping it safe and secure.
