Collapse then you parasitic fucks. Maybe real taxis will make a comeback then.

[–] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 31 points 1 day ago (2 children)

yah, do these parascite companies think any of us like them? if i could summon an actual cab from my phone while innebriated, i would. we like your apps you stupid shites. we hate you. pay your fucking workers

[–] Empricorn@feddit.nl 16 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I hate to be that guy, but you've been able to summon taxis via phone pretty much for as long as either have existed.

But I get what you mean, the app is the game-changer. I've had dispatch schedule a taxi for me and then they just didn't show up. 🤷‍♂️ No way to track or check the progress...

[–] AtariDump@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Plus, with the app, there’s transparent up front pricing.

Good luck getting that from an NYC cab.

And, depending on the location, it works in other states/countries as well.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Right, so the difference is that they built a system that actually provides service.

[–] PunnyName@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

But they aren't paying the people enough that do the actual work for said service.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

Yes, that's the problem with it.

[–] lemmy_at_em@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

In Japan they have the Go app that allows you to hail and pay for a taxi ride directly in the app. You pay all of the regular dates and fees. The app just adds an additional fee on top to pay for the service.

It was incredibly useful and easy to use. You could even see when the taxi accepted the ride, track their progress, and message the driver if there was a question.

I think ride sharing services are forbidden in Japan. But this app seems like the best of both worlds.

[–] buddascrayon@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You say this like taxi companies weren't grossly underpaying their employees as well (for literally decades). LoL 😂

[–] viral.vegabond@piefed.social 7 points 1 day ago

Yeah, well at least they were employees and not 'contractors.' Ride share companies are shit and everybody knows it.

[–] dylanmorgan@slrpnk.net 70 points 1 day ago (1 children)

And again: if your business model relies on underpaying people it’s not a good business model.

[–] DemBoSain@midwest.social 17 points 1 day ago

But...but...capitalism?

[–] CurlyWurlies4All@slrpnk.net 62 points 1 day ago (2 children)

If you can't set your own rate, you're an employee.

[–] buddascrayon@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago

This is actually the best take I've ever seen on the entire "gig economy".

[–] chonglibloodsport@lemmy.world -5 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

You can set your own rate though? You can refuse as many trips as you want. If a trip is below what you want to be paid, refuse it. You’ll keep getting offers for more. You’re never under obligation to work.

If you’re an employee, you’re required to work and can be fired for refusal.

[–] Dragonstaff@leminal.space 8 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago) (1 children)
  1. Someone who is not an employee can negotiate the fee per mile. You seem to think only accepting longer trips is the same.

  2. No, you can't only accept longer trips. The system will punish a driver for attempting to choose which offers to accept, and drivers won't learn the destination until the passenger is picked up.

[–] chonglibloodsport@lemmy.world 0 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Well that’s different from food delivery, where you as the driver see the offer in dollar amount, restaurant location, and estimated time of delivery. You see a $20 delivery but it’s estimated to take 1.5 hours? Just refuse it.

The system doesn’t punish you. You can refuse as many as you want and they just keep coming in.

[–] CurlyWurlies4All@slrpnk.net 1 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Refusing pre-defined contracts doesn't make you a contractor. It makes you unemployed.

[–] chonglibloodsport@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago

Contractors are unemployed by definition. Lots of contracts are tendered as-is and non-negotiable.

[–] cassandrafatigue@lemmy.dbzer0.com -1 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

You can accept or decline their rate. That is not setting your own rate, fucking .world in the name and I just know I'm gonna be reading some deliberate misunderstanding chud shit.

[–] TheMilk@lemdro.id 45 points 1 day ago

If your company cant survive because it has to start paying your "contractors" as actually employees. Then you shouldn't be in business. Adios!

[–] MTK@lemmy.world 38 points 1 day ago (1 children)

"If you you don't let me abuse the system I will fail 😭"

Oh no!

Literally every company ever.

[–] FisherOfSaints@lemmy.world 33 points 1 day ago

Guess its a shitty business model if it can’t survive paying fair wages.

[–] Wilco@lemmy.zip 24 points 1 day ago

If your company relies on taking advantage of others ... maybe the company should not survive. Something the USA needs

[–] ZILtoid1991@lemmy.world 20 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

If they can't pay a decent wage, they should file for bankruptcy.

No but see you're being unkind. These are corpora5e citizens. people. Do you have no heart? Think of the shareholders they'll leave behind!

[–] noxypaws@pawb.social 16 points 1 day ago

Please collapse.

[–] SirSamuel@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago
[–] AlexLost@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago

Gig companies are such a joke. They try to offer a service, but they want millions for doing nothing while the actual people who make their service useful are scrambling to make ends meet. Greed personified in App form. Restaurants use to deliver for free as incentive to get customers, now you are forced to use one of these fucking apps that tacks on an exhorbitant charge and then they still ask you to tip on top of these new exhorbitant charges.

Blow it all up, let's start again. Maybe we'll get it right this time?

[–] PissingIntoTheWind@lemmy.world 7 points 9 hours ago

Then let if fail. Bring back cabs.

[–] the_riviera_kid@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

If you can't afford to be in business then don't be in business.

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 6 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago) (1 children)

It's so fucked up that these ultra wealthy companies are exploiting people like this. Uber was the first to bring legislation up near me, and I did not appreciate them winning that vote. They ran a successful, multi-million dollar campaign to delude voters into thinking full employee status actually hurt the drivers.

I talked to drivers about this in California¹; lots of them bought the bullshit, got angry when i said they were wrong.

¹i wasn't paying for the rides. Didn't have options.

[–] bassad@jlai.lu 5 points 1 day ago

Justice is so slow, it took 15 years to set what was obvious since day one

[–] Cruxifux@feddit.nl 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oh no! Good thing we already have this service in the form of taxis you fucking idiots.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

As if a taxi would ever show up when you called

[–] Cruxifux@feddit.nl 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They’re good in my city.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world -2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That doesn't help literally the rest of the planet

[–] Cruxifux@feddit.nl 1 points 1 day ago

I mean is it really that bad everywhere else in the world besides Alberta? I’ve lived in every city in this province and never had a problem getting a cab. Even when I’ve travelled the only place I had a hard time getting a taxi was London.

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Wild that we have to have court proceedings to determine that people working for a company to earn a paycheck are, in fact, employees.

If your company cannot pay its employees properly, regardless of w2 or 1099? Then your business is not in need or, you need to re-evaluate how you make your income to pay your employees properly.

[–] aeternum@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 7 hours ago

maybe.... just maybe... you should rethink your business if your business would collapse because you have to pay people properly.

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Don't these companies bring in billions of dollars in profits? What's the big deal, that their CEO won't get a few extra millions?

[–] thermal_shock@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

That's the point of everything with money. Greedy fucks mad they cant break the rules for extra millions.
