I never understood what the sponge was for. Like does she shove it up there to soak up the cum?

Contraceptive sponges are/were basically the precursors to IUDs. Basically a (simplifying) female controlled form of birth control for people who don't respond well to The Pill.

As it provides zero protection against STIs, it is theoretically a form of birth control you use in addition to a condom (in case of tears/improper sizing) or with a partner you are fluid bonded to and are comfortable having The Talk in the event of a missed period.

Mostly it just raised a LOT of questions about what Ms Benes was getting up to with these randos

... was this when she wanted to bang a Kennedy? Oh god, now I need to look up which one... To The Plex Server!!!

It was JFK Jr, he crashed a plane in the ocean in 1999, the year after Seinfeld ended.

The episode is S04E10 "The Contest", "The Sponge" is S07E09 and Elaine is in a steady relationship with Puddy around that time, so who knows what she was using with Kennedy.

Fluid bonded sounds like something you'd say before activating a thumper to call shai halud.

Is the birth control sponge still available?

Yes. Though the birth control sponge was taken off the market in 1994 – and again in 2008 – it was reintroduced for a second time in 2009.

Why was the birth control sponge discontinued?

The birth control sponge was introduced in 1983, but was discontinued in 1994 after FDA inspectors discovered bacterial contamination at its manufacturing plant. The sponge reemerged in 2005 under new ownership. The new owners promoted the product and then sold it to another company – a business that went bankrupt in 2007. A new distributor picked up the birth control sponge in 2009, and the product has been sold nationwide since then.

That case of sponges Elaine found might’ve been dangerous!

It’s to cleanse the vagina.

[–] HikingVet@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

No, they were a form of birth control. The sponge was filled with a spermicide.

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Why did it have a scrubby side and a smooth side then smart guy?

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

The scrubby side is to catch the sperm, the smooth side is for comfort on the vaginal wall, duh.

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world -2 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Vaginas are an organ not a house they don’t have walls.

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

If a vagina isn't a house, then explain how Pillow Pants the vagina troll lives in there!

[–] Smeagol666@crazypeople.online 3 points 23 hours ago

I love a good Clerks reference, here's some Lemmy Silver {S}.

Please consult your local ~~doctor~~ adventurer if your vagina is inhabited by a troll

[–] Nurse_Robot@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What do you think it’s some kind of waterway now?

[–] NateNate60@lemmy.world 22 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

In terms of their utility as a cleaning tool, scrub daddies are actually quite good at what they do. They're somewhat more expensive but remarkably worth the money.

[–] jqubed@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

I have a strong preference for Dobie Pads, and found their version inferior

I’ll take one for the team. What is up here?

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 30 points 2 days ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

It's a reference to an episode of a 90s sitcom about nothing.

Specifically the episode of Seinfeld where Elaine finds out that the perfect birth control for her (the sponge) is being discontinued so her new criteria for a sexual partner is to determine whether they're attractive enough to use one of her limited supply, which she calls being "spongeworthy".

[–] ButteryMonkey@piefed.social 6 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Which is reasonable from what my mom told me. She agreed those were the best.

[–] jqubed@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

How well did they work if she still became a mom, though?

[–] DagwoodIII@piefed.social 8 points 1 day ago

"By choice, not by chance."

I've been waiting since 3rd Grade to use that one.

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

She thought I was sponge worthy.

[–] ButteryMonkey@piefed.social 5 points 1 day ago

Probably. Her standards weren’t that high; I’ve met my dad.

I can give more of an answer. There is (or was) a birth control method called the sponge, or the today sponge. It is entered into the vagina and pushed up against the cervix, blocking the entrance, and it contains spermicide as well.

In s7e9 of Seinfeld, the sponge is discontinued, causing Elaine to panic (as it is her preferred method of birth control) and search across the city to find more sponges. When she does find and buys a case, she then realizes that even though she has more sponges, she may never be able to get more, and thus starts to debate on whether her current boyfriend is "sponge worthy"

[–] Sonor@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Thank you :)

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Wait, that was season 7? The sponge was discontinued in 1994. Seinfeld debuted I think in 1990. That means the sponge episode was 3 years after the discontinuement of the sponge!

[–] DagwoodIII@piefed.social 4 points 1 day ago

The show was created before the internet became popular.

They could fudge on details with impunity.

Complete and utter impunity!!
