I ended up on .zip, the switch was mostly painless, just a couple small tech issues and having to get rid of a default block. I didn't have any communities I managed, so not really applicable. I did consider Piefed, but I'm satisfied with Lemmy and Jerboa, and many accounts I see from piefed are superusers I don't vibe with so it hasn't drawn me. I would say the switch was pretty seemless and I didn't grow super attached to lemm.ee because it wasn't my first instance to shut down.

5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.

More or less the same experience
I ended up switching to a number of instances. The account I'm on right now is lemmy.today, which claims to be financially stable with good uptime. But my main account is on piefed.social.
I can't say I've missed the old lemm.ee communities, although I do regret that all the images I uploaded were deleted, I thought they'd somehow be spared by the other instances. I use external image hosts now.
Couple questions that I hope you feel inclined to share:
- What makes you (and others I guess) prefer Piefed?
- What external image hosts do you prefer?
🙂
- I'm part of the mod team at !movies@piefed.social (formerly !movies@lemm.ee), and PieFed is what users ended up voting on as to which instance we should move to. At first I was hesitant to go to another platform, but I've gotten totally used to it by now. I'd say the best part of PieFed is flairs, they're so much better for sorting out posts!
- I use Postimages for image hosting.
Thank you for your work there !
Cool! Thanks a lot, I appreciate it! 🙏
I considered PieFed, but ended up sticking with Lemmy. I think Lemmy feels less complicated, there's just less features, which I prefer. No hate for PieFed, of course, I think it's awesome!
db0 has been great! I couldn't bring my communities with me, but it's fine... I didn't really have much anyway.
I do miss lemm.ee, because their very generalist maxims really resonated with me. I really don't think there's a true spiritual substitute.
I joined dbzer0 for mostly the same reasons. It has the same laissez-faire defederation policies as Lemm.ee, it's a great community of like-minded progressive anarchists, etc. I had already been considering switching prior to the announcement of lemm.ee closing down just because some frequent-posting Lemmy community members were there like Blaze and the man dbzer0 himself. The actual transition itself was trivial, I exported my community subscriptions and user tags and imported them to the new account without issue. I'm very happy with the result.
Yeah, the transition process is pretty much seamless, if you aren't a mod.
I think Blaze actually posts from PieFed now? Not sure...
That's what I've been seeing as well. I just first heard of dbzer0 from their handle when they were posting from there.
Turned out painless. Piefed has been just as good as .ee for the most part.
What do you like about Piefed over Lemmy?
I diversified and wound up making a bunch of accounts. If I am being honest, I forgot about the whole .ee transition until this post, so I guess all in all pretty well.
I should have increased my next-to-nil activity on my fedia account but noooo!
Instead thanks to some recommendations I ended up on db0 (also on sopuli but I barely use that one). It' seems like a fun instance and you get to write your own essay on why Leftism is Good while you're at it. Alas, I lost some posts on lemm.ee that I had tabbed on phone to check later, no idea what to do about that. I hear there were plans to launch a read-only archive of the instance, which would be nice to at least recover that data and be able to find those posts and open them / save them from another account, but no idea what eber happened to that archive idea.
I have not considered Piefed... out of laziness mostly. I was not informed much about it by the time the migration took place, and while it should be easy to just create an account over there, I know in the heart of the cards that it's gonna sit unused by me until an instancepocalypse hits db0. Ya know, just like my fedia and sopuli accounts. /shrug
I did switch to piefed
Switched to Piefed for the crosspost comments consolidation, multi communities, keyword filters.
I also had almost forgotten about Lemm.ee shutdown, so that's probably a good sign.
Was on lemm.ee. I do miss it, I think it was a really cool instance, for no particular reason. I tried lemmy.zip, and have an alt there, but my home now is PieFed. The developers here are incredible, and I love the look and feel of it better than any Lemmy instance I've tried.
I wasn't moderating any communities at the time I switched, so my transition as an end user was pretty painless.
And the others, do you miss lemm.ee communities that died out where you couldn’t find a replacement for?
I don't even notice they're goen.
