So, the GOP Senate gets to posture that they're on the side of farmers, knowing full well that the House won't pass it. They're just pandering to their base. Politics as usual. I bet they cleared this with Trump beforehand.

This is all bullshit.

[–] Bob_Robertson_IX@discuss.tchncs.de 23 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Even if the House does pass it, trump won't sign it.

[–] DeathByBigSad@sh.itjust.works 5 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Make him golf for 10 days and then it automatically becomes law.

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 3 points 3 hours ago

I wish he would golf for the rest of his life.

Despite the opposition in the Senate, the House is unlikely to take any similar action. House Republicans created a rule earlier this year that will block resolutions on the tariffs from getting a floor vote.

he tariff resolutions are a rebuke to the tariffs themselves and to Trump overstepping his authority and bypassing Congress. Senator Tim Kaine, a Democrat from Virginia, told reporters that the symbolic opposition should catch the president’s attention.

House Republicans created a rule earlier this year that will block resolutions on the tariffs from getting a floor vote.

When I heard it described, they said basically that the House decided to automatically rubber stamp whatever tariffs Trump made.

Here is the first clause of Article I Section 7 of the US Constitution:

All Bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives;

While this means that they do have the power to create a bill that delegates their authority, it's hard to see this tariff nonsense as anything but an abdication of their constitutional duties and a weakening of the checks and balances that are supposed to be built-in to our democracy.

Maybe the founding fathers never expected representatives to just hand over their power so easily. Like, no matter how idiot-proof you make something, America will always invent a bigger idiot.

Many founders worried over party politics to their death beds. Their nightmare? A demagogue with such a grip over his party he can basically command congress.

That’s what we got.

Congress aren’t handing over power; it was already taken from them before the term. Their hands are tied.

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 21 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Bullshit. Congress is enabling him. They could remove him entirely if they all chose to.

[–] brucethemoose@lemmy.world -1 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

It would be political suicide. I bet most of them would get recalled.

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 14 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

There's no way to recall a member of Congress. They would only lose their next election. But the deed would be done.

[–] Triasha@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

The ones with the courage to stand against trump have already been weeded out by retirement or primary. The sitting members are the replacements true to the cult. They have abdicated their responsibility.

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 2 points 3 hours ago

It's funny that the EC was created in part to prevent Trump, but it's what allowed him to gain power in the first place.

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 2 points 19 hours ago

I don't think that gives them power to delegate.

Of course if it went to SCOTUS they'd say it's very cool and very legal.

[–] fluffykittycat@slrpnk.net 15 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

So it's not ending anytime soon because the house has to sign off and they're shut down indefinitely as a last ditch effort to keep the Epstein files from getting out

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 12 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

created a rule earlier this year that will block resolutions on the tariffs from getting a floor vote.

Worse than that, they have a rule now.

[–] fluffykittycat@slrpnk.net 7 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

!!!!!

This country is so busted. We literally have to start fresh

[–] Rocketpoweredgorilla@lemmy.ca 7 points 20 hours ago (3 children)

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 8 points 20 hours ago

General strike is a great idea.

[–] PancakesCantKillMe@lemmy.world 1 points 20 hours ago

Three times.

[–] Whostosay@sh.itjust.works 1 points 19 hours ago

I keep chewing on the cables with no luck.

[–] CmdrShepard49@sh.itjust.works 11 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Senator Tim Kaine, a Democrat from Virginia, told reporters that the symbolic opposition should catch the president’s attention.

How's that "symbolic opposition" been working out for us for the last 10 months, Tim? We might as well refer to you guys as symbolic representatives at this point.

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 5 points 18 hours ago

10 months? Try 30 years, at least

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 18 points 17 hours ago

They should be voting to axe all of them and reiterate he does not actually have that power since the courts have not been doing their job.

[–] expatriado@lemmy.world 10 points 20 hours ago

did they name the bill Stop Trump From Fucking Shit Up?

[–] tornavish@lemmy.cafe 8 points 19 hours ago

Nothing will stop it. Just like he wasn’t supposed to use the national guard and then this week, whoops!

[–] UltraMagnus0001@lemmy.world 3 points 2 hours ago

And nothing will happen because of executive decisions by our king.

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 1 points 19 hours ago

No no no. Trump pulled this bullshit. Let him lie in his bed that he made

[–] Randomgal@lemmy.ca 0 points 19 hours ago

Politics for the news. While nothing actually changes.

[–] Typhoon@lemmy.ca 0 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

We're long past the phase where congress can regain control of this. Even if they did somehow get this through the house Trump would ignore it.

This is why the people hoping on winning midterms are misguided. He's already taken ownership of congress's powers when his own party runs both chambers. He won't give it back if the democrats win.

[–] NaibofTabr@infosec.pub 13 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

This is why the people hoping on winning midterms are misguided.

If your message is "don't bother voting", please see yourself out. We no longer have time or patience for that kind of pro-authoritarian propaganda.

[–] Typhoon@lemmy.ca 5 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago) (1 children)

Nope. Every battle needs to be fought against the fascists. But there are a lot of people not acting now in the hopes it will save them. It won't.

[–] NaibofTabr@infosec.pub 3 points 5 hours ago

Oh, yes in that case I agree with you, people should be getting more active.

The best thing everyone could do is get more involved with their local politics. Far too many town councils are filled with the kind of people who run the HOAs you hear horror stories about. Their voices and choices need more competition.
