After some digging, I also found this list: Top publicly traded Canadian companies by revenue

Right off the bat, I noticed a few issues:

  1. The list only includes publicly traded companies -- which is in the title, they're not trying to hide that fact, but it does mean that I'll need to find additional resources for privately owned Canadian companies.

  2. While it seems that most of the companies are Canadian, I spot-checked a few and found that some of them were owned by larger non-Canadian parent companies.

For example, "Imperial Oil Limited is a Canadian petroleum company. It is Canada's second-largest integrated oil company. It is majority-owned by American oil company ExxonMobil, with a 69.6% ownership stake in the company."

So, the hunt for resources continues!

This list inspired me to create this post: Canada's Top 100 Employers

What bothers me about this list is that, "any employer, private or public sector, with its head office or principal place of business in Canada may apply to the competition." Yet if you search for "parent company head office" on the individual company pages, you'll find that many companies do not fit this description.

Oh, and there's a lot of money exchanging hands in order to get on this list. I appreciate the work involved in creating and gathering all of this data, but I'd be curious to see who doesn't make the cut.

So, I'm wondering if anyone else has alternative resources they've found in their job search.
