Boycott US

Overview:

The community dedicated to boycotting the US until they stop fascism, restore full democracy and start following international law.

Americans have a moral obligation to resist Donald Trump and project 2025 at every turn.

America is a flawed democracy currently being ruled by oligarchs. Stop the backslide! Dont let America become the next Hungary.

America needs to challenge the court rulings of citizens united v. fec and shelby county v. holder, protect the media, implement independent district drawing, and the single transferable vote so they don't end up having people stay home in life-changing elections because they cannot vote for their favourite candidate.

This has always been a thing.

Nothing new. I already met some in Europe 25 years ago. They told me they are from Toronto. “The beautiful west coast” 🤦🏻‍♀️

This has been advice I've heard literally my entire life as an American. People like Canadians way more than us. For good reason

[–] CobraChicken3000@lemmy.ca 26 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Fix your effing country and you won't need to pretend that you're from a more humane society.

[–] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 month ago

My country is about to disenfranchise me and probably prevent me from working. If I am not in concentration camp, I will be on the street.

What if we would rather be Canadian but can't afford to move, and aren't special enough to breeze through immigration? What if we wish BC and the Pacific states could join forces and be a chill, socialist coast? Baja can come too.

[–] ragepaw@lemmy.ca 15 points 1 month ago

As someone from BC, you can fuck right off. Fix your own shit. Don't try to absorb BC into your nonsense.

[–] gruvn@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 month ago

Absolutely not.

What if your grandmother had balls?

Fix your country so you don't have to wish you were part of a more civilized one. Don't spread your pollution into our lands.

[–] sploosh@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Sorry bud, I didn't ask for my country to take this turn. I voted and worked against it. But then the election happened and funding got cut and I got laid off. It's really hard to fight the system when you're out of work, running down your savings and faced with literally $3500 of medical bills in the last 2 weeks with more to come and no diagnosis yet.

You might consider that lots of us are just as horrified at the US as you are, and that being a jerk at those that share your opinion doesn't cast you in the most positive light.

The warning signs of what's happening now started off in the 80s. By the end of the 90s the sounds of the jackboots marching in lockstep were just around the corner. It's now 2025. We're talking over a third of a century (some might argue half a century!) of rising fascism.

What did you do in that time? You voted? Here's a cookie. Did you primary the fuck out of the old folk's home that is an American political party? Or did you think voting for a pre-fabbed choice was enough?

Sorry, I don't care how horrified you are at the state of your nation. All y'all had a significant fraction of a century to catch this and turn it around and you did precisely:

  1. Sweet.
  2. Fuck. And...
  3. ...All.

So don't come to Canada. Clean up the shit you let pile up around you for, and I can't stress this enough, AT LEAST A THIRD OF A CENTURY instead.

And frankly, if an American saw me in a positive light, that would be something that tarnished my reputation as far as I'm concerned.

[–] sploosh@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Well, I was born in the 80s. In the 90s I was a kid, and in the 2000s I became an adult. Since then I've worked for unions, political campaigns and social services nonprofits, along with mutual aid/community organizing in my off time. I worked for young candidates in primaries who got NO party funding with tons of local support get murdered by incuments who got DNC dollars. Most recently it was a food bank, but funding disappeared with USDA's DOGE-ification so I'm out of work, with weird shit going on in my junk and rapidly mounting medical bills. Living in the US can be very rough when you're trying to make it better.

If you want to pin all of these problems on the random American person who happens to be on your side then that's your business, but around my parts we call that being myopic and prejudiced. If I get Canadian citizenship I'm moving next door to you and being a perfectly polite neighbor.

[–] ZDL@lazysoci.al -1 points 1 month ago

You misunderstand. I don't care about the random American person who is "on my side". All y'all fouled your nest. That's on you and on you to fix. I don't need the kind of people who soil their nests moving into my nest, capiche?

As far as I'm concerned these days, being American is a lethal disease and a highly contagious one at that, as any examination of Alberta would currently show.

Or the UK.

I don't want any of you in my nest. For any reason.

No, check that. Your immigrants? Your black populace? Certain elements of the LGBTQ+ crowd (especially the T contingent)? I'll welcome them, the victims of your increasingly-less-nascent fascism, with arms open wide. But the rest? Get to fucking work and clean up your fucking mess.

And this applies doubly to America's so-called "left". All y'all spent so much time language policing and infighting, to the point that organized labour, the shock troops of the left, started voting right, that you let the Nazis win. And now that the mess you enabled and you didn't properly fight (but hey, at least you got personal pronouns into the conversation ... just in time for the right to use them against you!) has overwhelmed you, you want to move to MY country and do it all over again?

Fuck that noise. Clean up your mess. Stay Down South™.

Consider exploring ranked choice single transferable vote.

This has been a thing for decades...

[–] gruvn@sh.itjust.works 16 points 1 month ago (2 children)

For people all over the world wondering if that person with a Canadian flag on their back is an actual Canadian - just talk to them. You'll know.

[–] Trex202@lemmy.world 15 points 1 month ago

If they act like assholes, treat them like assholes, nationality aside.

[–] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com -2 points 1 month ago

Not if English is not their first language.

[–] ZDL@lazysoci.al 13 points 1 month ago

This was commonplace back in the '80s already. Old news. Americans know they've been hated around the world for most of my life.

[–] lemmyknow@lemmy.today 12 points 1 month ago (3 children)

I thought 'Muricans were whatever flavour of European is most present in their ancestry

[–] ZDL@lazysoci.al 4 points 1 month ago

Or whichever ethnicity they prefer this week.

[–] Noite_Etion@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Oh, I am 1/64th Romanian, I'm basically Vlad Dracula.

[–] BCsven@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 month ago

Yes, so many say "I'm Irish", yet can't point it out on a map.

This is great, reads sort of like an onion article before the onion ran out of satire and got an overstock of reality

[–] ZDL@lazysoci.al 4 points 1 month ago

The Onion was ruined when VCs bought it. The Beaverton is still themselves, not a soulless corpse under the same name like The Onion.

I was down in Mexico when I was younger, I was talking with a street merchant I was talking Canadian and all that. He tried selling me something for $20 so I pulled out the queen and he was all like “no no no US money.” I ended up just walking away.

Later in life I was down in Jamaica I was talking to a street merchant and he tested me on which province I was from, I said “Saskatchewan but I can name any other one if you have no idea if where Saskatchewan is.” But the merchant believed me that I was actually from Canada.

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

That's been a thing for generations now. To the point that as far back as the 00s, a Canadian flag on your backpack was a sure sign of being an American tourist/hiker/etc., but if said backpack was a specific brand made & sold exclusively in Canada, it was generally assumed you were a local. (or, at least an informed, savvy traveler)

Livid? Fuck off, sensationalism.

[–] Typotyper@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 month ago

Try back as far back as at least the 80s

[–] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 month ago

I considered that until Trump threatened them. Then I realized it was disrespectful and insulting and decided against it. Sorry y'all. America has been embarassing for a long time. We're all ~~about to be~~ fucked if it is any consolation.

[–] cupcakezealot@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

as soon as i can move there i won't have to pretend

[–] ZDL@lazysoci.al 2 points 1 month ago

Have you considered instead just fixing your own place instead of moving and bringing your trash upbringing with you?

[–] swordgeek@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

This has always been a thing.

The joke when I was you was "how can you tell a Canadian from an American travelling abroad? The Canadian only has one flag on their backpack."

It used to be a cross we would bear, but if I see it in the wild now, I'll probably get a knife and cut it off.

Fuck 'em. Yes, even the left-leaning, trying-to-fix-things Americans. Fuck 'em all.

[–] asg101@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 month ago

The most worrisome thing is they will still be Americans after they flag-jack, and still act like Americans, thereby ruining Canadian's reputations.

[–] engene@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 month ago

If I was American, I would do the same! I really don’t mind. It’s the Canadian thing to do! 💪🇨🇦
