I'm going to challenge you all, right here, right now. Put down the thought of what's right, what's wrong, how people should be reacting, ect. I'm an apathetic bastard and I really could care less either way.

What I have noticed though is there's a LOT of divide on this one, more than usual. Lemmy's pretty homogenous but go outside to Facebook, Instagram, reddit, any of the mainstream places, hell, even talking about it with friends or family, you get some really differing views and people seem ready to discard longtime relationships over it. Hell, I've seen it happen 3 times now so far.

°So what do you think, take off the politics hat for a second and put on the sociology hat. Take a breath, and examine your surroundings.

°How does what's going on make you feel, sad? Angry? Scared, tired or relieved?

°What do you think this says about which direction our society is going, have you got any predictions? Any old timers who have been through near societal collapses before want to throw in their perspective?

I'm genuinely interested in what you all think

He would have wanted to be a martyr to the second amendment. At least he thought it was acceptable for other people to be.

I think the circumstances around his death were ironic - humourous even - but I don't take any joy in politically motivated violence. When you respond to rhetoric you disagree with by being violent then you've lost the argument.

Capitalism slowly grinds societies into dust. This is what I've seen, sociologically, regardless of any division over Charlie Kirk's death or however many schoolchildren get killed.

No idea who he is, and all the reporting around it seems to assume people know him for some reason.

It sucks that he got shot, but enough people get shot every year that I'm unclear why this one is any different.

If he has any family, I hope they have a support system to grieve

I'm not personally in the business of killing people, but situations and circumstances cause people to change what they believe is right and wrong. I do believe that sometimes killing people is a valid route to meaningful change. I don't think this is what happened here, I think some kid got a good shot in and is going to have to deal with the consequences of what his family and country did to him for a while.

Regardless of all of that, I can't help but see this event in context of America. Like you have a bunch of people getting fed crazy shit 24/7, in a society that is so deeply entrenched in gun culture that you physically cannot de-escalate, these things will happen. The fact it happened to a dude that was very publically advocating for people to have rights to firearms, it feels about the same as a person purposely stepping on a rake. Dude kind of did this to himself somewhat.

This says nothing about society any more than any other shooting does.

I'm opposed to political violence in general. I don't think it is condusive to having a peaceful, stable, and free society. Assassinating Trump...? I could see more of a justification, since he is taking direct political actions which could threaten peace, stability, and freedom. But Kirk was just a political commentator, so I see far less real justification for his death. I'm concerned about escalations of violence and the potential for increased political division.

Otoh, he seemed like a first rate douchenozzle, so on the topic of him actually being dead - I'm not too broken up.

FAFO, pure and simple. Not a doctor, but that much blood loss that rapidly generally means it was at least a quick death.

I don't agree with him. But he shouldn't have been shot. His whole thing was about discussing politics in a civilised manner. That shooter could have came down and debated him.

The video of him dying is just sad. It just shows how inhumane it is.

He wasn't even a politician, just an internet content creator. They just made a martyr.

I think these people publicly celebrating are being incredibly inconsiderate. I hate the guy just as much them, but the man has a wife, kids, and friends who are mourning. Have some empathy, respect them, and if you’re going to celebrate a man dying, do so in private.
