Anyone actually playing 7? I know of no one personally, and I've played them all religiously

[–] BlameTheAntifa@lemmy.world 50 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It shipped with Denuvo and I don’t pay for malware. It’s the first Civ game I haven’t bought at launch. I’m including the original.

[–] Ugurcan@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago (2 children)

It doesn’t have Hot Seat either. I instantly refunded when I realized that. How the hell a Civ game have multiplayer but not hot seat?

That's about as expected. As a big fan of civ, it just looked like a worse version of 6, which was a worse version of 5.

Only reason for the bigger playercount of 6 is because of Sean Bean's incredible narration.

[–] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I bet proportionally more DRM-free buyers play 5 and 4 too.

Honestly that's just how Civ has been for the past few releases, most people don't get it until the typical set of 2 major expansion packs come out and eventually go on sale. The base price of the full package has always been crazy high.

[–] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

We will see. 'Cause for all Civ 6's (and every Civ's) controversy, this feels different... It's like people have forgotten about 7.

[–] comador@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Beyond the Sword with Leonard Nemoy narrating of course.

[–] Justas@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago

There are also a bunch of mods, including the total conversion ones.

[–] EncryptKeeper@lemmy.world 17 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Well they removed the ability to play as “A civilization” in the game called “Civilization” so yeah everyone I know has swore off it.

[–] Cornelius_Wangenheim@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

It still amazes me they took the worst feature from Humankind and somehow made it worse.

[–] lmagitem@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Yes and no. If you want to play China you can play as the various chinese incarnations from beginning to end.

It only works with China for some mysterious reason though.

[–] Walk_blesseD@piefed.blahaj.zone 10 points 1 week ago

Yeah, I like it. It's definitely an unfinished product and lacking a lot of content and polish atm, but it's got the bones of a good game. Absolutely not worth the current asking price tho

[–] warm@kbin.earth 9 points 1 week ago

Nah, 5 is still the goat.

[–] Bademantel@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

I mean why play an unfinished game? The radical changes sound interesting to me but it needs at least two add-ons to flourish, the same old story as with 5 and 6. I can wait and pick up the complete experience for half the price if that ever sees the light of day after the layoffs.

[–] BombOmOm@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Naw, 5 and 6 are where it is at.

[–] AmbiguousProps@lemmy.today 3 points 1 week ago

Nah, I didn't even bother. I only play 5 & 6.

[–] Nelots@piefed.zip 3 points 1 week ago

Nah, 2 was the series peak.

[–] iMastari@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Naw, 1 was the GOAT. The full game, no DLC, one price.

I gave up after the 20th bug I encountered. (Yes I kept track.) It’s a shame because I actually liked the eras system.

[–] garretble@lemmy.world 27 points 1 week ago

I have a friend who was laid off from there today. Definitely feel bad for them.

"It was just Terry because he kept stealing pens from the supply closet for his own personal use."

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (3 children)

20 years ago I had a boss that always held his pens in his mouth.

So one day, when I was the only guy in the office, I took all his pens, and one by one stuck them up my butt.

Then I put them back in his cup.

[–] Aielman15@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

What did your boss do to deserve this?

I mean, what specifically?

[–] lagoon8622@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 week ago

He held his pen in his mouth 🤬🤬

[–] Varying9125@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (3 children)

are you familiar with ass pennies?

[–] mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

ALL OF YOU! EACH ONE OF YOU HAS HAD MY FILTHY ASS PENNIES!

now that's self confidence.

[–] CatsGoMOW@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Stop supporting 2K shit.

I've been saying this for years. And nobody listens.

[–] TipRing@lemmy.world 17 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I listened. I bought Civ6, hated it, didn't get any of the predatory DLC and went back to Civ4. Didn't give Civ7 so much as a glance. Sad to hear it went downhill from 6 though.

[–] Lumisal@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

Yup, without Luigi there to kill the bugs it's been pretty tough I suppose.

[–] Bonesince1997@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I think some of the DLC is what made Civ6 eventually tolerable. But that's already a bad sign.

[–] TipRing@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

It is a Civ tradition, BotS made Civ4 amazing, but I'd argue the base game was solid and just needed some mechanical polish.

[–] comador@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

This. Fuck 2K Games, quit buying their shitty EA level titles and move on.

[–] lechekaflan@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Game devs really have to keep their CVs ready at anytime given how uncertain their jobs are.

[–] SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

They are basically gig workers like in the film industry. This was always the case with QA jobs and low ranking artists, but nowadays it also happens to the other roles in a development project.

[–] Dead_or_Alive@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I don’t buy civ games until they release all the DLC. Since CIV 5 it seems like they have released unfinished games that lack major game mechanics on launch and the game only gets finished through DLC.

Poor adoption and sales with CIV 7 is their own fault. They have conditioned the market to wait for the DLC.

[–] Clbull@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Firaxis are like the Bethesda of turn based strategy games. They release buggy jank and expect modders to fix it.

[–] Zirconium@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

They must have built a mine over a monument

[–] ArchmageAzor@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

If you're a game developer, it's probably best to avoid big devs. Go indie instead.

[–] mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

I think every downturn in gaming history has led to explosions in indie dev studios and products.

this one feels a bit different; first time I've seen companies posting record profits and bragging about them, while laying devs off in absolute droves. it's almost as if consolidating a billion competing IPs into a handful of publisher/owners who don't really care about games per se, but see the enormous financial value in controlling the IP and production landscapes may have been a bad idea.

don't get me wrong, someone comes along and offers me billions for my company, probably gonna take it, but you can see how it becomes reductive; and then the people calling the shots end up knowing very little about the actual mechanics of the industry... yeah we're in for very fun times.

Indies will keep producing great stuff. Some of them will also get gobbled up. Support the rest please!
