I think it's important to keep in mind the importance of everybody's roles in the resistance to fascism. Too often I have seen people become combative to one another on the left simply because of the differences in our fundamental orientation towards resistance.

Historically, movements that such as the civil rights movement of the 60's were successful in part due to the militant flank that accompanied it. The thorns were a driving force in bringing the government to the negotiation table. Today, we are too quick to condemn and distance the movement from the people who unyieldingly fight for the same cause we all are pursuing.

At the same time, this opposition must be aimed at the primary culprits of the suffering we see. We should not make the mistake of laying most of the blame at the feet of mainstream liberals, but at those who originate the harmful rhetoric that they contend with. In kind, the mainstream liberals should not disavow the unrest that is a direct consequence of the attacks being made on civil rights and liberties. Otherwise, the liberal party will continue to be forced into compromise with the most reprehensible of stances. We all are fighting for a free society wherein no human has to endure the stripping away of their dignity. To achieve that, we must understand the way our intentions align, and that the diversity of our means is our greatest strength, not a weakness.

Do what you can to improve the world around you. But do not attack those who do this in a way different from your own. We are all on this planet together, and the best way we can fight oppression is by resisting in the ways that each of our contexts allows and empowers.
