Governor calls Trump ‘Taco’ online, short for ‘Trump always chickens out’, prompted by president’s flip-flop deadlines

California governor Gavin Newsom says the state will draw new electoral maps after Donald Trump “missed” a deadline on Tuesday night in an ongoing redistricting battle between Democratic and Republican states.

In a letter sent to Trump on Monday, Newsom said he would prefer to leave the matter of congressional map-making to independent commissions, not partisan legislative bodies and emphasized that he would “happily” stand down if other states abandoned their redistricting effort. But, Newsom said: “California cannot stand idly by as this power grab unfolds.”

Several states have waded into the redistricting wars, where Newsom and other Democratic state leaders had threatened to draw retaliatory maps if Texas were to move ahead with its redistricting scheme.

He's got to be getting under Trump's skin. The worst thing you can do is ridicule a narcissist, as they hate being laughed at.

I don’t like this era of troll politics.

The trolls should have stayed online. And y’all were so fucking stupid to continuously discount online discourse like it wasn’t happening in the real world. Is it clear now? The internet is just a communication medium for the real world. It wasn’t just an alternate reality you could dismiss.

This is not directed at the person whose post I’m replying to. Just people who were overly dismissive of online communication spaces and the reality of social media.

I agree that the standard of behavior for politicians has fallen into the gutter, but I don't think there's much to gain by taking the high road.

Exactly. The Scots sang it best...'Ye take the high road and I'll take the low road and I'll be in Scotland before ye".

…dear god this capslock-era of political discourse is so fucking exhausting, for so many reasons

[–] Smoogs@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Unfortunately necessary to talk to the level so trump’s followers understand. It’s like speaking another language

It would be even funnier if they had two different handles that communicated the same data: one in a normal fashion, AND ONE THAT SHOUTS AT YOU AND ASSUMES THE COMPREHENSION LEVEL OF A TODDLER THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER -GD

Expecting Trump to declare cannabis to be a schedule I drug, cancel the plans to reschedule it, and begin federal raids on legal dispensaries within California to harm their economy.

Bonus points if he collects state purchasing records (nationwide) to selectively threaten/silence people based on their social media history.

[–] RedPostItNote@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It already is a schedule one drug

[–] Monument@lemmy.sdf.org 6 points 1 day ago

I should have said reaffirm to capture my intended meaning there.

It’s not that he would change the scheduling, but change the handling of it. Right now the federal government more or less takes a strategy of non-enforcement at the intra-state level, but I could see Trump choosing to selectively meddle after reaffirming its schedule I status.

I’m glad that newsom is paying attention. Someone has to.

California may redraw its maps* Gavin can't actually do this unilaterally unlike in Texas and this will be put to a referendum on the November ballot.

The ballot measure won't be a sure thing even though California is very democratic, 38% voted for trump in the last election. It'll be a very off year election as well so turnout will probably very low and only those who are motivated. So the question is whose more motivated, the anti-trump resistance who want to stop him at any cost, or the conservatives in the state who are effectively having there representation taken away.

Maybe one good outcome of this is the conservatives will feel so unwelcome they'll actually follow through and fuck off to Texas and help ease the housing crisis.
