I would like to make youtube videos to learn from and to gain experience. I've thought about movie recaps but i was told its overdone or done too much. What im most afraid of is possible burnout.

But what do you think or advise?

First of all, if you are trying to make money then lower your expectations, many current Youtubers are struggling to continue to do YT full time.

If it's just for fun, then go for it

ManOfRecaps is like the only good one out there. There's plenty but it's AI generated or uses a voice synthasizer. So overdone yes, overdone well no.

It depends what your goals are. Just for fun and training? Why should it matter if the content is derivative and overdone.

Even if you do perfect orginale content it doesn't guarantee success.

If you want to to do recaps you should look at what you can add to make it more unique, like jokes or animations.

Burnout usual (not always) come from the expectations that every video will perform better, which is amplified if you are depending on it for you rent and food.

Only start the channel if you're going to bring something to it that nobody else does. If you're just planning on summarizing a movie in 3 minutes, yeah it's been done, but if you're adding jokes or other content to the summary, then go for it!

You stated your goal here. If your goal is to learn and gain experience, why does it matter if the videos are good or overdone or get views or whatever? Just do it.

Are movie recap videos overdone

Yes. Why's that a question?

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I just saw one that was more than an hour long. Why? If you recap something running for 90 minutes with a feature nearly as long, you've misunderstood what a recap is.

Man you would hate the breadcircus I've been watching their video on the force awakens. I'm about half an hour into the video and it's covered the first 8 minutes of the movie.

I've listened to all the long form content in starwars, it's great in my opinion.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

It's about Starwars, so I'd ignore it anyway.

The only reason you should care if it's overdone or not is if you want to make a living out of it. And if that's the case, don't. It's majorly overdone, yes.

You are better off making videos talking about a subject you like and know something about. You will be more interesting to viewers and more engaged in the making of it. Much less likely to burnout.

If movies are your interest maybe do videos taking about movies you like or find interesting. It will also help you find your own voice.

That's the kind of video I might click on.

It is not played out at all. Go for it.

[–] PillowD@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

I like watching them myself, 10 or 15 minutes to hit all the major plot points of a movie I'm never going to watch anyway.

Post on peertube, less personon it, means less people are doing it.

As you said, your goal is learning and gaining XP so who care if you do two episode and burn out?
