I'm using the 16's btw, so it's not like the older ones with the physical toggle

Open the pod bay doors, Siri.

[–] qistoph@feddit.nl 7 points 21 hours ago

I'm sorry Dave

Man, or, when I'm driving through the mountains, "Hey, Siri, play [some song I've owned 20 years and have downloaded locally to my device] in my Music app"; "I'm sorry, I'm having trouble getting a connection." You useless fuck, you never needed a connection back when it was Voice Control; it was only after we moved to the awful Siri future some 15 years ago or whatever that this unbelievably basic, used-to-be-built-in-so-I-know-you-know-how-to-do-it function was replaced with something that has to call out to the Internet to do anything of value.

[–] passepartout@feddit.org 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Didn't know they removed the toggle. This supports the hypothesis that they plan to remove every physical button and connector / port (which they can't, at least for the EU version).

Maybe they recognized that most people just leave their phone on silent forever.

[–] moseschrute@piefed.social 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They replaced the toggle with a button that you can program to do any one of a selection of things. For example, my phones always on silent so I use this button to turn on/off the flashlight. They have a it a really dumb marketing name ✨ The Action Button ✨

So it can only be used for one thing at a time? (https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/iphone/iphe89d61d66/ios)

Even my cheap Android phone does this better, although I wish there were more modes like triple, short then long, 2 short then long, or changing action for when screen is locked vs unlocked (e.g. flashlight when locked, toggle VPN when unlocked).
But it's at least something.

Yes, one thing at a time.

Each action requires a long press. A short press would show you the ringer state if you were looking at the screen, or prompt you to long press if you set it to control other functions.

If my phone is in my pocket, a short press does nothing, it wouldn’t even give me a short vibrate to inform me that the phone is on silent.

This has to be the biggest oversight of this button.

[–] TheRealKuni@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

You can make it do a bunch of stuff if you get creative with shortcuts.

My action button silences the media volume (and the phone just in case) and then vibrates the phone to tell me it has done this IF the phone is in a face-down orientation. Otherwise it toggles the flashlight on or off.

I’ve seen people with dozens of actions tied to the button depending on focus mode, orientation, time of day, location, all sorts of stuff.

WeChat for China, LINE for Japan and WhatsApp for Europe. You're on Eurasia but who the hell knows where!

[–] generic_computers@lemmy.zip 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

10000? That's a lot of offline games!

[–] PicardyNerd@lemmy.today 6 points 1 day ago

Sorry to tell you that currently there’s only 44, but that’s more than good enough for me ;)

[–] DandomRude@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

I’m sorry, Dave...

But siri is a 8000 series computer! They have never been wrong.

An space Odyssey is a timeless film

It’s a widget you can add to the Home Screen or side-bar, it lets you glance at your phone, watch, airpods and airpod case battery.

[–] smeenz@lemmy.nz 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

One of them is their watch

[–] zakobjoa@lemmy.world 1 points 22 hours ago

Ah, not bad.

[–] hardcoreufo@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The only voice function I use is setting timers and I get so frustrated Google wants me to unlock my phone to do so. I am using my voice because my hands are busy. So annoying!

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 3 points 22 hours ago

Not to mention the unlock to switch to USB file transfer, default in charging mode. There's still no root-hack to default to file transfer mode?

Daisyyy Daisyyy

[–] stupidcasey@lemmy.world 4 points 14 hours ago

My iPad likes to watch TV with me, she's constantly chiming in with little facts no one asked for.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Ironically, the reason she can’t is because it’s a physical switch.

If she turned it off for you , then the physical indicator on the switch would be wrong, but she has no ability to move the switch.

[–] ceramicsky@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The new iPhones have a button, not a switch so this is not an issue.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world -2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Because everyone always goes out and gets the new phone?

Yes. It’s an issue.

ETA: some quick searches and it seems the most common phone in the 13, with around 60% being the fourteen or older.

[–] amorpheus@lemmy.world 4 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

OP has one without the switch, so it shouldn't be the issue. Only happens because a trillion dollar company cannot account for the differences in their handful of devices.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world -3 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Because apple only maintains phones on an individual level?

And probably literally everyone who writes apps for iOS, as they would now need to account for everyone’s potential behavior.

It’s not “only”. Especially if you had to account for every possible variation in hardware. It’s more complexity and that means more opportunity for bugs.

[–] amorpheus@lemmy.world 4 points 14 hours ago

Too much to ask that an Apple AI knows the basic features of the Apple device it's running on?

Weird hill to die on, but you do you.

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago

Apple has you

im pretty sure thats the default on the action button.
