Surprise medical bills; random shootings; a fascist dictator leading the country; the complete and entire erosion of the rule of law

a fascist dictator leading the country; the complete and entire erosion of the rule of law

It's more relevant in the states right now, but this is something we should all worry about all the time.

To clarify for anyone who missed it:

Trump made a law that states that the president of the US is above the law.

This means that, even after the next election, he could remain president, since the laws that prevent this don’t apply to him. He could also just straight up shoot one in the streets and wouldn’t be able to be punished.

[–] confuser@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Wait really lol? Idk how this could legally have happened? And why isnt this across the news (nobody is allowed to say some degree of "but that's what they want you to think") lol

[–] darthelmet@lemmy.world 41 points 1 day ago

I think we might need a book to answer that. A comment seems insufficient.

[–] Flickerby@lemmy.zip 25 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Food. Shelter. Healthcare. In a lot of places water. Just staying in general is markedly more difficult.

[–] FireTower@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Have you seen Canadian house prices?

[–] Flickerby@lemmy.zip 6 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

No but in my neighborhood it's 3.5kUSD/month for a one bedroom studio

[–] qarbone@lemmy.world 3 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Ay, you live in Boston too?

[–] Flickerby@lemmy.zip 2 points 22 hours ago (1 children)
[–] qarbone@lemmy.world 2 points 21 hours ago

Ah yeah, of course not. Who would live in a hellscape where having an apartment to yourself is a fantasy?

[–] Greg@lemmy.ca 5 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Canada has some of the least affordable cities in North America but it also has some of the most affordable cities. If you are able to move then Canada has some very affordable options. But I appreciate that the ability to move is a luxury that many folks don’t have because of circumstances like family commitments.

Trust me, we worry about shelter and food and electricity

[–] CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

Lol. We have ~3 grocery stores and everyone knows they collaborate to rip us off. I'd take food off the list.

It's been a while since I checked, but I think Vancouver was the most expensive city for a while in terms of property values and rent. Nowhere is as cheap as cheap US areas, and southern Ontario is close to Vancouver. It should be getting a bit better, but that's because the government went into disaster mode to fix it.

The healthcare and water are legit, though.

[–] Doorbook@lemmy.world 23 points 1 day ago (1 children)

A friend in the US told me: I cannot work more hours because I need to keep my income at specific range to be able to qualify for provisional or federal medical insurance.

This is so fucked up.

Freedom costs a buck oh five

[–] poVoq@slrpnk.net 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

To me it lately sounds like Canadians do need to worry a bit about "freedom" being brought to them.

Yep, we're free to pay up and fall in line, or fuck off and die. That's the choice. Also for too many there's no choice, you get both.

[–] RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world 19 points 18 hours ago (3 children)

....are you joking right now?

Starting a war, forgetting your gun somewhere and only having your spare one to work with, making the payment on your medical bills, remembering if the McRib is back, worrying that the exploited people who did all the things you don't feel like doing will be deported, and forgetting to tell the President "thank you" every day as a tribute to their brilliant leadership.

Having moved from one to the other

  • Health insurance (it's not perfect but it's something)
  • Random shootings (they still happen but are not as endemic)
  • Corn syrup in literally every food
  • Having clean streets (particularly in cities)
[–] starlinguk@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago

Being stuck in a shitty job, because you now have a medical condition, and the insurance of the job you want refuses to cover you.

I do believe the reputational damage caused by the orange one might be one of the things. That and obvious tariff issues. Hopefully it's temporary , or you have people who just don't care.

[–] reddig33@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Medical bills and insurance.

Can confirm. You never know if the standard procedure will cost couple of hundred or thousands.

[–] ace_garp@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago

The chance of a nationwide maple-syrup shortage.

Having the most indecent & loudest loudmouths as their leaders.

[–] FerretyFever0@fedia.io 5 points 1 day ago

Other countries have this problem. Well, now that I think of it, it's mostly just the UK. Wonder where the US got it from lol

[–] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

I know Carney's not even close to as bad as Trump but he literally just called for a "Zionist Palestine"

Also, have you ever heard of Doug and Rob Ford?

Avoiding the famous things...

Tracking mud into someone's house. The most striking cultural difference is literally just taking your shoes off as a guest.

Alligators, tropical diseases, hurricanes for the most part.

Flag-worship. Which is ironic because tomorrow is Canada Day, but really the US is on a whole other level.

Government deadlock.

Pennies.

Embargoing Cuba.

Easy: destroying the world out of sheer stupidity and greed.
