Honestly, it's simply futile to seek compromises with this tyrannical government. Like all bullies, nothing is enough for them. They will keep on taking from you until you clap back.

[–] N0t_5ure@lemmy.world 35 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I think it's appropriate to note here that during his first term, Trump tore up NAFTA and negotiated his own trade agreement with Canada and Mexico. Now, just a few years later, he's torn that one up too. If I were a country considering negotiating a trade agreement with him, I'd keep in mind that any agreement struck could evaporate on his whim.

[–] WhatAmLemmy@lemmy.world 17 points 2 days ago

The solution is to simply not "negotiate" with terrorists. Just make decisions that financially damage them and their cronies, while forming close relationships with non-terrorist states.

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 20 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Exactly.

Why waste time and effort trying to come to an agreement with a regime that routinely lies and has a history of breaking agreements they previously made?

[–] Jason2357@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 day ago

Not just effort. Negotiating trade agreements with the states have always involved giving concessions that mean enacting legislation that deliberately hurts Canadian industries and/or consumers in return for low cost access to their markets. If they are going to be unreliable, we should not be hurting ourselves in hopes that they will play by their own rules.

[–] CatherineLily@lemmy.blahaj.zone 40 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Not sure why Canada even bothered. Trump is clearly unpredictable and untrustworthy. He'll go back on his word at the drop of a hat.

[–] brax@sh.itjust.works 18 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I think it's for show. "Look, we tried. The problem isn't Canada."

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 days ago

Yes. This manufactures consent among us for harsher actions that would hurt us more in the short term.

[–] Reannlegge@lemmy.ca 13 points 2 days ago

Yeah it is called TACO, Trump Always Chickens Out.

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 13 points 2 days ago

We didn’t want to, we elected a government specifically to not attempt it

[–] BlameThePeacock@lemmy.ca 36 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Yes.

Because Canada is cold. Wink-wink. Definitely avoid postal codes that start with V3.

I just moved less than an hour from the eastern border with Maine. I’m from New England, and I lived in Alaska for 3 years. I’m prepped and ready. I also own like 12 parkas.

Do you have a Canadian ancestor?

The 2023 Bjorkquist decision overturned the first generation limit to pass down citizenship. There is an Interim measure to accept applications for special grants of citizenship beyond one generation and there is a bill in Parliament to put in place a remedy to address the findings of the Superior Court of Ontario (which the federal government has not appealed).

[–] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I do. My mom‘s entire side of the family came down from Quebec. But that’s great grandparents back, and as far as I can tell, that’s too far back to count.

[–] StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I have sent you a DM.

Good luck. Great grandparents born in Canada can be enough. That would make your grandparents ok your mother’s side citizens. (There have been some retroactive corrections of women’s loss of citizenship in marriage.)

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 days ago

Watch Vance and his techno fascist cronies take over after that. This may get worse before it gets better.

[–] DoctorNope@lemmy.world 21 points 2 days ago

He’ll soon be crawling back to negotiations like a bird on its belly, crowing the entire time that whatever idiotic thing he is going to do has brought Canada to heel. Sad. Weak. Trump always chickens out.

[–] Showroom7561@lemmy.ca 20 points 2 days ago

Meh. He's upset about something that's been in discussion since 2019... he makes it seem like this just suddenly came up. Of course, he's a clueless idiot, so everything is new to him.

[–] pinheadednightmare@lemmy.world 19 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Canada should increase it in response. Then drop the mic.

[–] BetaBlake@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

Yes please do this Canada

[–] Punchshark@lemmy.ca 17 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Would you say Taco may flip-flop-o?

[–] Bakkoda@sh.itjust.works 15 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Smash us with tarrifs. Refuse entry to all politicians. I dare say hold back the maple syrup.

[–] Reannlegge@lemmy.ca 8 points 2 days ago (2 children)

The (very real) Maple Syrup Mafia would not be happy if they could not sell to the US. They should really start working at other markets.

This mother fucker is so exhausting.

[–] Reannlegge@lemmy.ca 11 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Oh shucks, it is to bad I have moved to the high C’s for most of my media. It is so much easier now then in the late 2000’s when I stopped because it was easier to pay for the US services. With the *arr apps I have found it is easier to do the pirating. I use a pi-hole to block the ads on the Canadian channels showing US shows. I cancelled all the subscriptions and started paying for CBC; sure I did not need to pay for it as my pihole was blocking the ads but I can now watch the news if I want to, not that I need it but hey I have once or twice! I have moved most of my data off of Apple’s iCloud, I have stopped using everything google (Including their ads), minus YouTube but even then I stopped paying for premium and started using the app Unwatched to block the ads, I wish there was a Canadian version of patron to give money to the few Canadian content creators I follow religiously (Steve Boots, and the Beaverton). I had started degoogle-ing in phases years ago, but Trump pushed me to stop paying for youtube premium and moving to Unwatched.

I moved my blog off of the Wordpress servers on to a Canadian host (I wanna say hosthero); I added the unlimited email package so that I can create pseudo random emails, to replace Apple’s hide my email, (Service name).(random word)(three random words)@reannlegge.ca. I wanted an off site password manager (just incase I broke something) so I pay for 1Password which is Canadian. I moved all of my data off of iCloud minus the backups for my iPhone and iPad because I do not have the hardware to do it at home at the moment to easily back it up at home.

Why was OP banned for posting a Reuters link? Or did a mod edit this post somehow after the fact?

[–] Arkouda@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Oh okay, i only looked at this community's modlog and was a bit confused. That makes more sense.

If we could only pull that off without being preemptively "defended" against... I don't think them fuckers would sit tight while we make a nuke. I think the only way we pull this off is if we could buy or "host" European nukes which must happen in total secrecy and extremely quickly from conception to deployment.
