This bot's whole purpose is to import crap from Reddit to ... here? Why would anyone want that? Somebody did a bunch of work, made an instance and a bot, and they've currently got it spamming Lemmy ... just to enshitifiy lemmy.

Lemmit.Online bot@lemmit.online

I blocked the bot and the instance, but I have to login in order for that to be effective. If I don't login, this stuff is all over the main feed.

Am I the only one that thinks this is spam?

...
Edit ... Thanks, people. Learned some things.

I don't really mind them all that much. The communities are easily blocked if you don't like the particular type of content.

Despite the general cesspool that Reddit has become, it still has some good content within many of the smaller subs that are less affected by bots and politics. If I can get some of that content without giving Reddit an ounce of traffic, it's fine by me.

That said, I'm also the type of Lemmy user who frequently scrolls through every post and runs out of new posts. My app marks every post as "read" when I scroll past it and often I clear the whole "top today" list. I don't read every post though. Anyways, I appreciate any way to get more context on Lemmy.

I need it to keep up with medical news from a niche community.

Just block it and move on.

First thing I did. 2 years ago when I joined lemmy. Them decided to remove all not accounts entirely

Its that old? I don't know why I'm suddenly seeing their stuff. I'll inquire w/my instance admin.

Probably someone followed some community that the bot posts to on your instance and it begun federating.

[–] dbtng@eviltoast.org 1 points 1 day ago

Ok. This is useful info.

Not blocked, but my instance is fully de-federated from lemmit.online.

And yes, I consider all the re-post instances/bots to be spam.

[–] dbtng@eviltoast.org 2 points 1 day ago

Somebody else pointed out, maybe my instance just federated with them. This seems a likely cause for the sudden change in my feed.

About two years ago, yeah. I can just visit Reddit for the one or two subreddits left that I want to see. Viewing them with worse formatting and missing comments is pointless for me.

[–] Brewchin@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Some people get value out of it. Others don't.

That's why the blocking capability exists. 🤷‍♂️

It is pretty spamming, sadly it's one of the ways people see people possibly moving to platforms like Lemmy (and the rest of the Fediverse) when the platforms like Reddit become more enshitified, there's got to be a better way than a bot that spams out.

I could at least say it's a bit more okay if it was on muted or something by default but still then it's pretty bad. I want to interact with actual people.

[–] dbtng@eviltoast.org 1 points 1 day ago

I'm still kinda new here. I'm guessing if enough instances admins hate it and defederate Lemmit.Online, they might stop?
I haven't seen much lemmy drama yet. (Well, other than lemvotes, that was dramatic.) I don't know how these things sort out.

[–] neidu3@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

I don't consider it spam, but it's redundant enough to have ended up on my blocklist.

[–] swizzlestick@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago

First block on my list ¯\(ツ)

[–] Green_Mouse@piefed.social 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I didn't see this bot, but that's probably because I selected “hide bots” in the settings.

[–] dbtng@eviltoast.org 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I've just checked that setting. Ok, that's an option, thx. This is the first bot that I've actually noticed (aka it annoyed me), and I've blocked it specifically.

I just view my Subscribed feed, so no.
