The crown jewel of El Salvador's aggressive anti-crime strategy — a mega-prison where visitation, recreation and education are not allowed — became the latest tool in U.S. President Donald Trump's crackdown on immigration on Sunday, when hundreds of immigrants facing deportation were transferred there.

How many fucking times in history do we have to learn that this isn't how any of this actually fucking works? None of these things actually deter crime.

[–] catloaf@lemm.ee 34 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

What makes you think it's meant to deter crime?

[–] LodeMike@lemmy.today 9 points 13 hours ago (2 children)

The entire point of a criminal justice system in a modern legal system is supposed to be harm reduction. Flat out. Deterring crime (and its severity) is effectively the same thing.

[–] catloaf@lemm.ee 21 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Key words "supposed to be". Somehow I doubt this is what's happening.

[–] LodeMike@lemmy.today 4 points 13 hours ago

Yes we've established this

[–] DadVolante@sh.itjust.works 10 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Nah, it's a revolving door for free labor.

[–] LodeMike@lemmy.today 3 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Hence why i said "supposed to"

[–] DadVolante@sh.itjust.works 5 points 8 hours ago

Which is what I disagreed with.

That's what you're told it's supposed to do.

That's actually not what it's there for.

They do if they never release.

Bukele’s justice minister has said that those held at CECOT would never return to their communities.

It’s the university for criminals. How do you expect anyone to pull off a an elaborate bank heist, or build a drug cartel. You need experienced professional criminals for that.

[–] HowAbt2morrow@futurology.today 6 points 14 hours ago (2 children)

Digging out of there with a hidden spoon is probably not gonna work (this time).

[–] chaosCruiser@futurology.today 5 points 10 hours ago

Nah, the idea is that you apply by starting with something small, like mugging. You study with the best for a few semesters, do your time, and get released early. When you graduate, you’re ready to start your assassination business.

Have they tried posters of Rita Hayworth and Raquel Welch, and a rock hammer?

Some of these thugs may have a tattooed poop chute too. Like with the Wiley coyote tunnel?

[–] Dimmer@leminal.space 16 points 15 hours ago

My next novel is about someone is brought to there as a child, starts a military movement, invades and eventually destroys United States.

The Trump/Elon/Putin Administration claims that the planes were already in the air when the judiciary struck down this mass deportation, and therefore the ruling didn’t apply to this specific case and by inference could apply to future cases.

That somewhat indicates that they’ll respect the rule of law in mass deportations. If not, this could create a pipeline of Venezuelan citizens in America being labeled as gang members and sent to a Supermax prison in El Salvador with zero due process. The planes leave US airspace before the case can be heard. And citizens of which country are next? Speedrunning fascism.

Which is, of course, a bullshit excuse. Even if the ruling didn't apply to midair flights themselves, everything done after landing would still be covered.

By any definition, handing the hostages over was in violation of the ruling

That somewhat indicates that they’ll respect the rule of law in mass deportations.

Wilhoit's Law very much applies to how they see the world:

"Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition ... There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.”

Rich, white (pseudo-) Christian cis men is the entirety of the in-group, no matter how many Uncles Tom and Aunts Tomasina they currently have helping them achieve their goal.

If not, this could create a pipeline of Venezuelan citizens in America being labeled as gang members and sent to a Supermax prison in El Salvador with zero due process.

I hate to be a doomer, but it's almost certain that they'll eventually get away with doing that or something similar enough to make no significant difference 😮‍💨
