Let's go TACO, let's go!!!

Update: Yes, the Dems have been pretty much useless but they can't do anything when they have no majority in either the House or Senate and Don TACO is ruling by EOs.

But this is how you get him and them. Fuck the high road, hit them at their level. Call them names like weirdos and TACO. If anything induce strokes in all of them.

Instead of doing policy, they do tacos.

What policy are the national Democrats intended to be doing with their swanky majorities of -8 in the House of Representatives and -5 in the Senate?

This is part of what the opposition is supposed to do. They criticise, make fun of, offer legislative resistance to, and draw attention to the bad policies of the government.

The Filibuster Explained

Some lawmakers acknowledge that the filibuster, which has effectively set a 60-vote supermajority requirement for passing legislation in the Senate, could doom many of the proposals they have championed

Did you not watch middle aged Korean politicians scaling fences and grabbing stormtroopers’ guns in the streets?

Why do you demand so little of your elected officials?

[–] RaoulDook@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I'm not sure exactly what, but it should be something closer to what many brave Americans did in San Diego and Minneapolis recently. Giving out free tacos is better than nothing I guess, but it's not the level of effort their responsibilities require in the moment.

The story how they got to be a minority is an epic story of mismanagement, corruption and insanity that stretches over many decades.

There is nothing wrong with free tacos, but it’s like polishing a mountain high turd

[–] lmmarsano@lemmynsfw.com 16 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Tacos are delicious, though. 🌮

Good strategy. IIRC, this is how German citizens stopped the rise of Hitler.

[–] Melvin_Ferd@lemmy.world 16 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (10 children)

Honestly, satire is pretty effective. Hitler was obsessed with projecting power, and humor especially the kind many Jewish people used to survive the camps was a powerful tool for undermining that illusion. Humour takes power away from a thing. It's why it's great against powerful entities but feels evil when used against the weak. If more people had mocked him early on, the myth of a strong, untouchable leader might never have taken root.

It’s always baffling when a leftist jumps in to argue that pointing this out is somehow pointless or juvenile. Maybe it’s a lack of social intuition, or just a failure to grasp the bigger picture but too often, the left underestimates the power of cultural resistance. Ridicule, art, memes, jokes these are tools that shape perception and cut authoritarianism down to size.

And these politicians you roll your eyes at? They’re not doing it for themselves. They’re calling out people like you, trying to shake you awake, trying to keep the pressure on. But instead of joining in, too many of you just sit back, waiting for someone else to fix it all.

Most people don‘t know this, but the reason Steiner's attack failed was because he had been to Taco Bell the day before and got the poopenfarten so massively it made his troops slip on the waste flowing from the toilets.

On one hand, it's useless performative bullshit. On the other hand, Trump seems to be exactly the kind of guy to get really upset about that sort of thing.

[–] arrow74@lemm.ee 22 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Also it's this type of performative bullshit that gave Trump his power. Don't underestimate the power of this type of thing.

I'd still prefer actual policy, but it's a start

Yeah it doesn’t work like it does for him without a face. There’s no face here. It works for him because it’s him, personally, doing and saying wild shit.

They're planning to take away food stamps, end health insurance for the needy, and are trying to exterminate the T in LGBT (don't worry, they'll come for the LGBs too since its last hired, first fired). But, the best Dems can do is giving out tacos once as a political ploy?

[–] Doomsider@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago

The conservatards are literally at war with women right now. The Democratic Party suggests we eat tacos. Well played /S

They can't do anything without a majority?

A spending bill passed last month that did not have enough Republicans to pass it ... Dems voted on it and helped pass it. This should not be happening.

I hate absolutely everything about this.

I've never been a fan of calling Trump nicknames or going low, not because I'm trying to uphold any sort of highroad Liberal ideology but because I personally find it crass and he's an abominable human being with thousands of legitimate offenses to point to. If you do it on your own time to blow off steam, whatever, I'm not gonna get on your case. But I need more from our politicians.

What's the message here? I get that it's generally to agitate him, but are you trying to goad him into not chickening out? Just fucking do it, bro. There are thousands of Americans with food insecurity right now and you're gonna give Republicans tacos?! Again, I get that it's not really comparable and those issues are on different levels, but it still maintains that glossy respectability where you can't really levy any criticism against it because they're just giving away tacos. There's no real message here at all.

And lastly, nobody is even standing up to put their name on this. The DNC is doing this? Who? Whose idea? We have so many Republicans at every level chomping at the bit to get themselves in front of any camera they can to spread their repugnant message and we can't even get one Democrat to stand up and put their name on this meager messaging. Fucking cowards, the lot of them.

I expected nothing and I'm still disappointed.

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

And these tacos don't raise minimum wage to a livable wage, tacked to COL adjustment, universal health care, safe infrastructure, leisure time, she, livable housing, safe public transportation, green energy, clean food, soil, air, water, fully funded, world-class education. And they probably add to the myriad health effects of garbage food.

[–] Coolbeanschilly@lemmy.ca 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

But that would mean they would actually have to work, rather than perform their part of the Grand Political Mummery to convince you they are actually different than The Other Guys.

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

NoBoDy WaNtS tO WoRk AnYmOrE Dems can resume saying that when they fix these issues and do get to work on constituents' behalf.

And while they're at it, codify Roe and cap C-suite salaries.

Eta: and codify lgbtqia/race protection. this absolutely will happen when they fear the public more than they fear the ultrawealthy.
