Do like they did in Canada: the push button you have to reach inside the handle to lift it

Oh wait..

You’re in US. No never mind. You’ll likely have someone shove a bunch of shit in there.

Yet another thing that only works in Canada..

Difficulty level: Japan

Apart from the individual kindness of convenience store and private buildings, there simply are no public trash containers. Especially in tourist areas, double especially in nature preserves.

Tourists tend to mash garbage into bottle recycling bins and places that clearly are not meant for garbage.

[–] AtariDump@lemmy.world 16 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Maybe then they need trash cans.

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Japan’s culture is that you normally take your trash with you. Like I said, there are places the public can throw stuff away. But that’s not normal and you shouldn’t count on it.

Most all of the places tourists visit in Japan are not resorts built for their enjoyment, but a functioning city or social center where natives live and work (including historically-famous places like Kyoto).

Maybe tourists need to learn to hang onto their junk until they get back to their hotels.

We have functioning cities and social centers here as well. They have trash cans around the place. It's not really that much to expect a trash can on a couple corners.

[–] sem@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's also a change in mindset. If you know there won't be trash cans, you'll bring less trash with you. That's why national parks advertise "pack it in, pack it out" so you don't get people using the "disposable single use tents" or bring in other items that generate trash that ends up in the park.

Yeah I remember we went to London like 8 years ago and I distinctly remember carrying some candy wrapper in my pocket for like 40 minutes because when walking through the city there was not a singular rubbish bin to be found.

[–] Smoogs@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Get a roll of those doggy poo bags and you can easily stash it in there in the pocket.

[–] Wizard_Pope@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

How does that help exactly? I live in a place that has available rubbish bins.

Wtf are you going on about now? im responding to your comment about you whining about carrying a wrapper for 40 mins in London . The fuck is this now about your rubbish bins? I didn’t ask about your rubbish bins. I don’t care about your rubbish bins. Why are you talking about your rubbish bins now? You high or trollin?

[–] Wizard_Pope@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yeah I get that. Still how does having a doggie bag help me get rid of the trash so I don't have to carry it with me?

Me saying we have bins here refers to me not needing it in daily life.

[–] Smoogs@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

I mentioned doggy bags for when you’re travelling so you have a way to stash garbage if there’s none around. This has nothing to do with your bins.

Tbf there's a konbini with trash cans every few hundred meters. Only issue being if you don't buy something it's not considered ok to use them afaik, but can just buy sth to eat immediately and throw away the packaging there or just something smaller than your trash and bring it with you after.

Or honestly ignore it because realistically as a tourist all your trash came from the previous konbini anyway and it would just even out. Just don't go there to dump whatever.

We have those in the US, too, and they are the most common style I see in national parks.

[–] Glytch@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago

There's also some overlap between the skinniest bears and the fattest Americans.

[–] Jhex@lemmy.world 39 points 1 month ago (1 children)

we used to think this was a joke based on wild exaggeration... then you elected trump twice

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 27 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I think this is another case of the Venn diagram being a fuzzy circle.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 15 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear. Fuzzy Wuzzy had no hair. Fuzzy Wuzzy was a fuzzy circle.

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago

Not feeling that great today, this made me happy. Thank you.

[–] JulieLemming@lemm.ee 20 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Yeah well maybe they should hire better designers because I routinely cannot even manage to open them let alone someone less intelligent

[–] kameecoding@lemmy.world 44 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Oh damn, who will tell this person?

[–] JulieLemming@lemm.ee 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

What are they already working on it?

[–] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 18 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Self deprecating humor doesn't get the respect it deserves on Lemmy.

I love when someone manages to get some good banter go through the moderation. I like funny slander. Most however don't take the bait and just move on. Some guy was trying to tell me I am schizophrenic but thats not really super witty

[–] LeFantome@programming.dev 17 points 1 month ago

Watch a bear do it and repeat what they do

[–] j4k3@lemmy.world 18 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Bears can vote now right? 🧔

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)
[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago

Definitely can't get worse.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 month ago

Depends on which kind of bear you mean..

And that's why Yogi ends up with all the picnic baskets.

[–] hakunawazo@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Therefore they must lower the safety regulations so that the dumbest tourists will be eaten by the smartest bears, so that they can install advanced trash bins afterwards.
