I'm searching for a Lemmy community to ask and discuss deeper societal questions such as about social injustices, greed, capitalism, communism, racism etc. On Reddit there were communities like r/SeriousConversation . Is there any alternative here on Lemmy?

Oh goodie, a brand new account made to ask this question. Why not ask the question here with your real account?

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

It's named after this sub...

100 to 1 their real account can be found in the mod list as someone recently bannex

What is a “real account” anyway? I’ve been here for over two years, and this is probably my eighth account. Whenever I hit around 1000 comments, I make a new one - so I’ll be ditching this one soon, too. Which of those would even count as my “real” account?

Lemmy is such a small platform that if I’d stuck with my first account, tons of people would recognize me by now. I don’t want internet fame, and I’d rather make it as hard as possible for any potential stalker to follow me around. Not tying your entire post history to a single username just seems like the smart move - and honestly, it surprises me how often a privacy-minded platform like Lemmy feels hostile toward people who do this.

For good faith questions, I've got a few that I've been meaning to post to !discuss@discuss.online, we appreciate good discussion. The community's been a little quiet but I'm going to put some work into it. I do specify "good faith" just because it doesn't need to become another "here's my 'unpopular' opinion that is actually popular and i want validated" or "here's why I hate ". If you're going to post bad-faith questions, or want to skirt the lines of what's appropriate, that will make my life harder as admin and that's considered a bannable offense 🙂

There's also !AskUSA@discuss.online for US-specific questions. We generally avoid politically-charged topics because there's better places for those, but questions that aren't just "Why does Trump suck?" might be a good fit.

Here's a sample of a few recent popular !AskUSA@discuss.online posts if they pique anyone's interest:

Is your deep question why is racism still racism

[–] dandelion@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

what topic do you want to discuss? This is relevant to know what community will accept discussion about it ...

[–] ask_lemmy@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Like about social injustices, greed, capitalism, communism, racism etc

[–] dandelion@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

seems like a lot of the discussions already happening across lemmy, tbh

[–] ask_lemmy@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago (2 children)

In which community can I post something like that?

[–] vvilld@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 month ago

This one right here, for starts. Just post your question.

[–] dandelion@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

you weren't specific about the topic of your question, but the topics you mentioned are acceptable in most communities - feel free to post your question in this community, for example ...

I had no idea that formatting worked. I personally still prefer the ! as a prefix though. (It's shorter)

[–] nichtburningturtle@feddit.org 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

And it also doesn't work on all clients. It's shown as normal text for me.

[–] FlihpFlorp@lemm.ee 4 points 2 months ago

collapsed inline media

On voyager half of the text is linked for me

Funny we’re all seeing different stuff from different clients

[–] Opinionhaver@feddit.uk 1 points 1 month ago

These kinds of topics are like plutonium on here if you even hint that you're not 100% onboard with the mainstream Lemmy narrative. A community like this is badly needed, but in my view, it would have to be pretty heavily moderated - people who show up just to throw personal attacks instead of engaging with the actual topic should be shown the door right away.
