Remember that Trump's real purpose in continuously needling and threatening to annex Canada, Greenland, and Panama is so he'll have something to regurgitate whenever he needs a distraction and wants the media to focus on something other than one of his many damaging scandals or authoritarian power grabs, or just when he feels the media isn't focused on him and he feels a need to be the center of attention again.

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 29 points 17 hours ago

I think it's that, and also that he's serious about annexing Canada. Whether he can convince anyone else to be serious about it is another question, but we shouldn't get complacent.

[–] Thunderbird4@lemmy.world 25 points 14 hours ago

No, stop dismissing this as “just a distraction.” Just his comments alone already violate the sovereignty of several independent nations and should not be trivialized.

Control of the Arctic circle is a very real strategic goal, and one that Putin has had his eye on for decades. Currently, Greenland and Canada are the only controlling interests in the region with oil drilling moratoriums in the Arctic. Controlling those countries’ territories and improving relations with Russia are completely congruent efforts toward that goal.

If there’s anything we should have all learned about trump so far, it’s not to dismiss anything he says as just a joke. Sure, there’s damaging scandals to distract from, but that doesn’t mean this is just theater.

I think its trade and military strategy. Ice caps are melting, arctic will become a major global shipping lane, he wants military bases and ports through which major commerce will flow. Its just something else for the US to control and extort.

[–] moody@lemmings.world 8 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

I don't think he's able to plan that far ahead. If that's the plan, it's not his.

He's just a narcissistic bully and needs others to bend to his will.

[–] Kyle_The_G@lemmy.world 3 points 15 hours ago

Oh I agree, I think he's an absolute tool and he's doing it for ego and legacy (we can clearly see this play out with all the tariff nonsense) but I bet he has smarter people advising on that plan. It drives me nuts that someone can so consistently fail upward their entire life its unbelievable.

They already control most of the Arctic, and they have unlimited ability to add bases in the Arctic, but they don't. It's almost like none of this is for strategy or resources but more for vanity because it looks good on a map in his addled mind.

If Canada was absorbed into the US, there would never be another GOP administration.

[–] gruvn@lemm.ee 20 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

As if they'd let us vote. F this.

Nobody here knows what a Canadian birth certificate looks like so we won't accept them just to be safe. /s /un-s

His tweets always sound like something a child rapist starts seducing with

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 15 points 17 hours ago

There's documented reasons for this.

[–] don@lemm.ee 9 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

I wouldn’t blame Canada one fucking bit if they build a wall of their own. In fact, I highly encourage them to do it, and soon.

[–] Tolookah@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 14 hours ago

They should charge us for it.

As a Canadian, I dare to speak for all of us when I say: "GO FUCK YOURSELF, DUMNALD"

[–] gruvn@lemm.ee 4 points 12 hours ago

As a Canadian, I support this message.

[–] masterofn001@lemmy.ca 4 points 15 hours ago

So he's pro open borders.

And the 2 flags on a shiny oversized and under used pickup with remnants of Fuck Trudeau decals waving Canadians would get to experience actual tyranny.

I thought I couldn't be more embarrassed to be a US-ian than I had been before, but it keeps happening.

When I want to hear opinions from six-time business bankrupter, I'll go to the social assistance office and chat up Ol' Gil. Or the memory care ward of a retirement home to hear the random word-salad of confused, frustrated, incontinent people with no mooring in the present or reality. This clown is entertainment like giving a bonobo monkey a loaded and cocked AK-47: you know people are going to die, but who; and first?
