(Current banner: La Mancha, Spain. Feel free to post submissions for banner images.)

Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in !yurop@lemm.ee. (They're cool, you should subscribe there too!)
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media. Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to any of the mods: @federalreverse@feddit.org, @poVoq@slrpnk.net, or @anzo@programming.dev.

We should get rid of them and push forward Europeans media platforms.

[โ€“] atro_city@fedia.io 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

We are on the fediverse. That should suffice.

he typed while receiving a notification from his family WhatsApp group

EDIT: i was talking to where I responded but it applies to most was my broader message

[โ€“] atro_city@fedia.io 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Are you talking about @PotatoLibre@feddit.it?

[โ€“] PotatoLibre@feddit.it 1 points 2 days ago

Ah ah, not talking about this place! It's a small community.

I'm talking about Fb, Insta, Twitter and so on, not cause I'm directly interested, but because we can't trust them and they have a huge influence.

Big Tech being caught with their hand in the cookie jar: Daddy Trump please bully the EU, they are mean to us!!!

[โ€“] Gudl@feddit.org 26 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Ban meta and co in Europe!

[โ€“] LowtierComputer@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago (3 children)

I hate that WhatsApp was so great and became the standard messenger, only to get swallowed up and steal all your data for the big Zuck.

[โ€“] BeNotAfraid@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Did you see Zuck on Rogaine saying that "The CIA have access to whatsapp, even with the encryption'? Nice subtle way to say the Trump administration has access to every single Whatsapp message, profile and call history in the world. Likely all of their platforms realistically.

No, but it makes sense. He's recently been a Trumpist, anti-DEI, anti-feminist weirdo.

Signal is a good alternative.

[โ€“] LowtierComputer@lemmy.world 2 points 19 hours ago

It's all I use! High five!

[โ€“] ziggystar@lemm.ee 2 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

They should force all large communication platforms to offer federation.

I must use Whatsapp, since everyone else is using it. Our company must use teams since customers are using it.

[โ€“] doodledup@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Bro, Europe isn't an autocracy. What is it you actually want?

[โ€“] BeNotAfraid@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

No, but we absolutely should. Still, unilaterally.

[โ€“] SapphireSphinx@feddit.org 18 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Given his notable track record, if I were a Big Tech company, I would hope that he refrains from exercising his self-proclaimed "art of the deal" for fear of potential bankruptcy.

Unless I'm missing something, the EU+ BRICS "has all the cards."

[โ€“] jmcs@discuss.tchncs.de 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Well, the R in BRICS makes it even more toxic than the US.

If you think what Trump says about Greenland is bad, you should hear what Russia keeps saying about the baltics and Poland.

Russia is not being particularly secretive in their plans for a war with the EU.

[โ€“] Maeve@kbin.earth 3 points 2 days ago

Ah American exceptionalism. Because P2025 would never, ever do such a thing.

Djt is a puppet, dancing to the strings pulled by his puppet masters. He's irrelevant, but as the curtain surrounding the wizards.

[โ€“] futatorius@lemm.ee 1 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Russia will get their ass handed to them if they try taking on NATO, even without the US involved. The Ukraine invasion has made it very clear how degraded their capabilities are, and even more, how primitive their tactics are. And Russia's fleet in the Baltic can't do shit because of the Swedes and Finns joining NATO, and because Ukraine sunk most of the fleet using drones. Building warships is a long lead-time activity.

And as for Poland, Germany will not tolerate that. And the Poles are a far more powerful state than Ukraine, and hate the Russians even more, if that's even possible.

[โ€“] jmcs@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 4 hours ago

That's still no reason for us to give them money. We can't negotiate with the BRICS as BRICS because every cent we give to Russia is a cent that Russia will use to to buy things to fire at us.

They can't win a war, but the way their regime is set they need to fight a war. And while they can't win they can ruin many lives in losing.

This is comparing Cyanide and Sarin

Lol, the Audacity to complain about "extraterritorial regulations that stifle their innovation"
Those morons should be banned until they comply and pay up or fined much much more the next time, for them thinking they stand above the laws of foreign sovereign states.

[โ€“] Zwuzelmaus@feddit.org 4 points 2 days ago

On Wednesday the first penalties came down under the act: โ‚ฌ500 million against Apple and โ‚ฌ200 million against Meta, along with significant requirements for both companies to change their business practices.

Note that these were the first penalties. More are likely. Not everything has been judged yet.

They can whine or call for their puppy or whatever, but it does not change their wrongdoings of the past.

Even if the EU would change their laws again NOW, it would not count for the past.

Trump might be capable of a brief hog-trot, but I can't imagine him swooping.
