My wife will sometimes say she’s setting a “mental alarm” when she’d like to get up at a certain time but it’s not actually critical to be awake then and she tends to wake up right around then. There are plenty of times she wakes up one minute before her real alarm, too.

[–] spykee@lemm.ee 29 points 1 week ago

Your wife's probably a witch bro. Tomorrow she'll say she regularly gets a good night's sleep. Witches man, I'm telling you.

See, I can do this, and often do. I wake up at 0730 naturally and it’s a great feeling when I wake up a couple of mins before the alarm. But I do set an alarm - because I’d never, ever bank on it.

Sod’s Law I’d sleep in when I need to catch a flight.

[–] Zagorath@aussie.zone 7 points 1 week ago

Does she sleep a consistent schedule & get enough sleep, or is she able to do this despite waking up after 5 hours of sleep at a time that's 4 hours earlier when working than on weekends?

I use an alarm, but 9/10 times I wake within 10 minutes before the alarm.

[–] cRazi_man@lemm.ee 21 points 1 week ago (2 children)

My body has started doing this and I hate it.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 15 points 1 week ago

Just drink a ton of vodka. You’ll never have to worry about waking up before your alarm goes off.

[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 12 points 1 week ago (2 children)

The worst part is when its a weekend and your alarm isn't going off at 6am but your body wakes up at 5:50 with a paniced feeling amyway

[–] cRazi_man@lemm.ee 4 points 1 week ago

I really hate that I can't get a lie in on the weekend. Kids wake up and my brain wakes up. I'll have to start going to bed earlier....which I hate. I want to stay up and play video games and wake up late. But I guess I'm becoming an old man and need to embrace the old man life.

I usually get up by 5. If breakfast isn't out by 6, I will certainly know about it.

They are a useful backup to have.

I don't need an alarm.

I wake up every few hours regardless.

And I'm always awake about 20 minutes before my alarm, no matter that time I set it to.

Existence is pain

[–] RQG@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Set your alarm to 20 minutes after you want to wake up. Come on, that was easy.

I don't think there's a bigger bliss in this world than waking up randomly at night, looking over at the clock and realizing it's still early as fuck so you can go back to sleep 🤤

[–] farting_gorilla@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

When I was a kid, I would set an alarm for like 2am, just for this. I was a dumb kid (now not a kid...)

If I don't get up before 8:30am or so, my husky will softly grumble until I get up. The grumbles get progressively louder.

Edited to add A video!

Having kids removed the need for alarms. The whole house is awake between 630 and 7 every day.

[–] FinishingDutch@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

That’s basically everyone with a decent routine, no? I go to bed the same time, so I wake up the same time. The alarm is just for backup.

If anyone has trouble sleeping/waking with a set routine, there’s probably other factors at play like interrupted sleep cycles or sleep apnea.

I get up at the same time every weekday and it’s just programmed into my body to get up then or an hour later on weekends. It took 40 years to develop this superpower.

I sure love going to bed at a reasonable time, so I don't need external devices to wake up :3

[–] infinitesunrise@slrpnk.net 7 points 1 week ago (2 children)

My cat has a more precise internal clock than humans could ever engineer.

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 4 points 1 week ago

Hint: it wakes up so punctually because it can hear the mice scratching in the walls, who are reacting to your boiler starting to heat the pipes at 7am sharp.

It really sucks when it doesn't work though. I used to wake up 5 minutes before my alarm like clockwork, and then ONE day I didn't set it. Well, guess what phone call I get that lovely morning.

I usually wake up around 5-10 mins prior to my alarm if I slept the right amount (around 6 hours). In the rare occassion I get woken up by my alarm I feel the rest of the day like shit (very tired, annoyed at evrything, very sensitive to light, need 10 coffees to survive).

Alarm is set for 4:45am, which lets me get my teeth brushed and pre-workout downed before the gym two blocks from my house opens at 5. I'm up at 3:45-4:15am every morning. I go to bed at 8pm. Once every 1-2 months, I'll hear my alarm.

[–] applemao@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I used to always wake up like 1-5 minutes before my alarm. Since moving that has changed though and my internal clock is lacking nowadays.

[–] Presently42@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

A propos of nothing, I think this is one of the funniest images ever made. The pure horror of the small child, the utter confident terror of the elder, the random shingles, the unexpected wooden bucket, the crazy cute rabbit staring at the unexpected wooden bucket - just pure genius

The trick is to figure out how long you sleep naturally and go to sleep that amount of time before you need to wake up. Doesn't work for insomniacs unfortunately.

[–] Necroscope0@lemm.ee 4 points 1 week ago

I used to need a bunch of them, then I got old and started going to bed at 9 almost every night and now I wake up within five minutes of 7 o clock EVERY day.

Probably would have been that way all along if not for all the drugs and alcohol I guess

[–] Dorkyd68@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

My bodies interal clock is spot on 99.9999% of the time. The one time it's wrong and im late for my own funeral
