It goes a lot deeper than pretending not to be big gubmint. Trump's con man skill (his only real skill) has tapped into the right-wing Christian need for a Daddy figure and managed to insert himself into that role. Their Daddy Knows Best instinct is so strong they'll defend him even while he's ass-raping their GI Joes and Barbies.
