True. Matrix is more for that. Or possibly SimpleX.

[–] big_slap@lemmy.world 16 points 1 month ago (4 children)

good luck trying to get family and friends on that lol

[–] msage@programming.dev 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

My mother and sister is on my homeserver.

Also my SO.

And my every friend.

And we use Jitsi for calls during gaming or whatnot.

[–] big_slap@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

jitsi, interesting..

[–] Ulrich@feddit.org 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Discord is not really intended for "friends and families", it's for communities.

[–] knightly@pawb.social 16 points 1 month ago (2 children)

It's not really for communities either, it's for locking communities into a corporate platform.

[–] Ulrich@feddit.org 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

...so it's not for communities, it's for communities...?

[–] knightly@pawb.social 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's not for the communities, it's for the shareholders-to-come.

[–] Ulrich@feddit.org 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Who are the shareholders going to exploit then?

[–] knightly@pawb.social 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Employees and customers, just like every corporation ever.

[–] Ulrich@feddit.org 0 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

"customers" meaning the communities?

[–] knightly@pawb.social 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Where else do you imagine dividends come from?

[–] Ulrich@feddit.org 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

No one was talking about dividends

There's no need to link me to my own comments. I did not.

[–] knightly@pawb.social -1 points 1 month ago

You can deny it all you want, but profits still = income - expenses.

Every dollar paid to a shareholder is a dollar stolen from someone who works for a living.

thats why right wingers love FB as well and over reddit, to. that way they can delete comments control things without having the discord admins hovering over them.

[–] shortwavesurfer@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Oh, i ditch family and friends who dont respect my personal data. Though its signal primary for me

[–] big_slap@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago

yeah, I get it. I told people one year for my bday to download the app for me to get most of my circle on it. most did haha

[–] mesamunefire@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

All it took for me is discord going down for a couple hours a couple of weeks ago. Now about half my friends went to it. All it will take is a small push or down time and they will need their fix somehow lol.

[–] Ulrich@feddit.org 11 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Unfortunately there's not really anything that comes close to Discord.

Revolt is the closest, as it's open source and self-hostable but still lacks many of the features and isn't federated.

I only used it once a while ago. What doesn't it do that Discord does that you also need?

[–] Ulrich@feddit.org 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Most everything. It's also very complicated to use and slow as shit. You should try actually using it and find out for yourself.

[–] executivechimp@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Everyone keeps recommending Revolt but I tried it last week and it's janky as hell and the voice chat just straight up didn't work. This wasn't just me, too. Our whole group tried it and gave up.

[–] Ulrich@feddit.org 1 points 1 month ago

Well that lines up with what I said.

[–] kitnaht@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

~~SimpleX doesn't even have a desktop client.~~ IT DO! Discord is mostly used for gaming.

[–] shortwavesurfer@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 month ago (3 children)

I do believe it does have a desktop client.

[–] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org 2 points 1 month ago

It is not there yet IMHO hard to advise it as singal replacement for now

I think this time next year tho....

[–] kitnaht@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago (2 children)

It DO! Which one am I mixing it up with then? Briar?

[–] shortwavesurfer@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 month ago

Possibly. Briar is mobile only as far as i know

[–] Ulrich@feddit.org 2 points 1 month ago

Nope, Briar has one as well.
