Connoisseurs obviously.
Who drinks $50 wine when they could just get $5 wine?
As the guy who buys his own wine and isn't that picky, I'd much rather open a $5 bottle than one ten times that price. Especially if it's a sweet red; then I can get an order of magnitude more drink than the snob who likes sour grapes.
(And, honestly, $50 is way too much for a common bottle of wine. Even $30 is nearly in the realm of conspicuous consumption.)
Fuckin love me a cheap ass box of Moscato from the liquor store down the road. If i pace myself it can last me weeks.
It's not $5. There's a tap in all our pockets, pipelessly connected to the Heidelberg Tun of free wine that comes in all colours, types, and flavors.
…but not that rare vintage from the Chateau you visited on your honeymoon. That one costs extra…
If it's in your 'private wine cellar,' either you already paid for it or it was gifted, still free-ish. If your wife is making you pay to 're-taste the honeymoon wine,' you might have other problems.
