~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

I don't get why the admiral made such a weird face over it. Surely Admirals had to do PR stuff too; and 'Captains Day' was probably a common thing on any ship with children on board (and probably had to interact with families even when they weren't allowed on board.)
Seriously, that admiral was probably one of the losers that ordered using children as a shield in the first place. I mean, er, allowing families, to uh, be together. on a totally-not-actually-a-warship-that-totally-doesn't-nearly-get-destroyed-every-other-mission ship of exploration.
Can you imagine the modern day equivalent, say an aircraft carrier, sailing the seven seas as a scientific/exploration/diplomatic/military mission with full families and a school full of children and even perhaps a small maternity ward.

They absolutely should have figured out some basic bitch warp drive for the saucer. Pop out nacelles? At some point the D was provided with a runabout, maybe two of those could have extended a warp shell around the saucer? Literally anything would be better than asking it to limp along at sublight speeds.
I mean, the Defiant had internal nacelles. other (alien) ships had internal nacelles. or even just "Warp field maintenance coils" that would allow them to sustain warp until they got far enough away or someplace habitable. But I doubt very much the Saucer would be able to reach someplace safe just carried by "inertia". particularly because the warp drive doesn't seem to actually be the ship moving. (once the warp field collapses, the ship is dead in the water.)
