Apple being needlessly petty yet again.
Hey dude I hate Apple as much as the next guy, but this one is on the EU. Apple removed that feature as part of the due diligence towards the Digital Markets Act, it even says so on the article.
I don’t know how the EU figured making Apple Watches not auto-connect to wifi somehow makes it more competitive for other brands though, your guess is as good as mine.
Maybe they thought Apple users are so brain-dead they’d rather spend 400€ extra just to get their phone-recorded WiFi auto sync instead of having to log into every WiFi manually like you’d have to do with a non-Apple watch.
But I do care about security and we know iPhones are more secure than most Androids, so I am okay with the tradeoff of less convenience to protect security.
You clearly don't understand why apple did this, and what the EU is trying to require here.
EU is requiring that third party apps have access to the same things as first party apps, that is all. If the apple watch app can sync WiFi network passwords to your watch, a third party app must also be allowed to do the same thing. Like say the Garmin app syncing this info to a Garmin watch.
Apples solution to this is to be utter cunts and remove features from first party apps just to be "compliant" and then go and try and turn the population against the regulators.
Why would Apple spend potentially millions on creating an open API to allow other platforms to be compatible with their services, when they can just turn that service off? I get it’s cunty but it’s a smart business decision. Nobody should be surprised Apple is doing this.
The apis are already there and accessible(though undocumented), your app just isn't allowed to be on the app store if you use it.
It would cost them next to nothing in dev time. They're purely doing this to protect their own monopolistic interests. Which I guess yeah is a good business decision, one that should be illegal and punished.
And it is, which is why the Digital Markets Act exists. But unless you want to enslave Apple into doing your bidding then I don’t understand what else you expect Apple to do. They just thought it wasn’t worth their while to enable that feature if it meant extra dev time and resources. They are a business after all.
The dev time of blocking these features in the EU will be FAR higher than allowing apps to use the already existing and well implemented apis.
They simply need to polish up some internal api docs for making public and stop saying no to apps implementing these features on the app store.
No it won’t dude you’re just making stuff up.
Also you seem to be under the persuasion that you’re forced to use Apple’s App Store. You’re not. Alternatives like Altstore PAL exist and are readily available if you wish. Whether you actually want to use those apps is another matter, but the choice is there.
Why do you want to force iOS to open up so bad anyway? I get that software freedom is cool but for that you already have Android (for the time being anyway). I used Android for 15 years but now as I grow older I appreciate the minimalist and well integrated ecosystem that Apple offers. The world is better with both options. You’re demanding a world where you’re forced to have only one.
This is why Europe can’t create anything btw. Everyone is so focused on changing what already exists and works well instead of innovating and bringing something new to the table.
Apple and Google have a duopoly with iOS and Android, so the only means of ensuring competition is preventing them from abusing market dominance by locking competitors out of exclusive platform functionality. Complying with the spirit of the law would be turning the feature into an API usable by non-Apple smartwatches.
I would love if the EU could come up with serviceable alternatives to Android or iOS. Unfortunately /e/OS ain’t it.
Yes we could dream Apple would comply with this but honestly at this point we already know how corporations work, they’d rather make their lives easier than compromise. The only time the EU managed to twist their arm was when they threatened to forbid iPhone sales in Europe unless they adopt USB-C.
It doesn't matter bro. Fuck them. If they want to make their product worse let them, and go buy an android watch instead.
And man, stop buying the iPhone security horseshit. Apple devices are not more secure because of their walled garden. The literal entire business world runs on Windows which is a more open platform than Android and is perfectly secure.
This is nothing more than Apple being petty and not implementing a basic feature in a device agnostic way.
The world runs on Linux actually.
Windows is dog shit and it’s kind of hilarious that you mention them as an example of good practices when they’ve been losing market share consistently to Apple, Linux and more recently Google’s Chromebook/Android. I wouldn’t wish Windows upon my worst enemy.
And yes, Apple devices are more secure than any alternatives. The evidence is pretty much everywhere if you’re willing to look into it. It won’t take long to find. Even Google is looking to now start closing down Android and adopt the so-called Walled Garden approach you’re complaining about.
Let’s talk again in a year’s time.
You're literally defending a trillion dollar corporation's anti-competitive behaviour, in a field that you have no expertise in.
On top of the fact that Linux is a more open platform than windows. So great job making a cohesive argument.
Apple's behaviour has nothing to do with security and everything to do with preventing third party competition.
I work in Cybersecurity compliance but sure I have no idea about any of this. Random guy in Buyeuropean is the expert.
I am aware Linux is more open but guess who the biggest contributors to Linux are? Massive private corporations. Without their contributions Linux would be more or less in the same level of obscurity as BSDs.
Also, I never argued that Apple’s walled garden are what make their devices more secure, you strawmanned me into that. I know the walled garden is however a factor, even if just by stopping idiots from installing malware on their devices.
Welcome to the imaginary world of oversimplifications where everything is black and white. I think you didn’t spend more than two seconds thinking about what you’re trying to argue.
On the one hand you’re fond of open source code (which I also am) because you know that open code allows us to find vulnerabilities faster. On the other you fail to see that when the code isn’t open, bad actors are less likely to find and exploit those vulnerabilities. It goes both ways because news flash, security by obscurity is a thing.
