We recently had a case here in Ocala, Florida, where a bunch of black kids were playing in their yard. They had an old white lady neighbor who hated them, and was constantly calling the cops on them.

On that day, she went to the yard, picked up a roller skate that was laying off to the side, and threw it at the kids. Then she picked up an expensive iPad that a kid had laid down, and went into her house with it.

The kids told their mother, and she went next door, with her kids along, to deal with this neighbor - again. This time, the neighbor shot through the door at chest height, and killed the mother dead, right in front of her 4 children.

Turns out she had been Googling Stand Your Ground laws, and was prepared for exactly this situation, probably even engineered it, knowing that taking the iPad would bring the mother to the front door.

As a notorious racist, who had threatened and tormented her neighbors relentlessly, and clearly planned this murder, everybody immediately dismissed her self-defense position, and she was sentenced to 25 years in prison, where she will likely die.

Oh yeah there’s a doc on Netflix about that showing all the police bodycam footage. It was a good doc but so sad :(

My mom told me about the doc, and I had to tell her that it happened near us.

I haven't watched the doc, but I followed the story closely, and I don't think I want to wallow in it any more. It's just too sad.

Yeah, totally makes sense. I wouldn’t want to revisit it either. :(

This is surprising.

A bit, yeah, especially in MAGA friendly Ocala. Even if the prosecutor wanted to show some leniency, the old bitch's past behavior precluded that. It was extremely clear that she planned and committed this murder, leaving 4 young kids without a mother. Even MAGAs couldn't deny that.

Even MAGAs couldn't deny that.

A world first. Truly shocking

At least the story had a somewhat happy ending. I feel terrible for the kids, even though they got justice in the end.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 22 points 18 hours ago

Happy ending? I don't know if I'd call it that. It's definitely justice, but often justice isn't happy, and is OFTEN unsatisfying. This is a perfect example.

Hopefully they can sue her, and take whatever little the killer had. It's not like she's going to need it, and if she ever gets out of prison, she'll re-enter society homeless and penniless.

There is some satisfaction in that, but those kids would almost certainly prefer their mother back.

holy fuck.

what is wrong with people.

Every time I hear about Ocala, FL I remember the time that a Florida judge tossed their case suing Lexington, KY. Someone down there copywrited or trademarked "The Thoroubred Capital of The World," in the early '00s and then tried to sue Lexington, KY for the title. Your own judge basically told the plaintiff, not just no, fuck no.
