Most depressing read ever, but thank you for posting. Truly Americans are capable of such brutality on those they have othered.
It's the nationalism. Nationalism is a form of cognitive fencing. If you place it down, it can stop your cognition. People use it to get other people to close out their morality all throughout history, most prominently in soldiers, but all across societies. Causes lots of dumb and stagnation. I hypothesize it has similar effects as alcohol on the human mind, and if used habitually, can shut down portions of the brain.
