Grinding.

When the game progresses naturally, and as you move through the game, you always find yourself in the right spot to overcome the next obstacle, that's great. But the second I have to stop progressing through the game and go spend 6 hours killing goblins, I'm done.

I like an optional progression grind. For example, when I'm stuck because I suck, I like having the option to grind a few levels and come back stronger. That's why I really hate games that scale enemies with your level. That just means I'm still stuck!

Also in such games it forces you to use an at least decent build instead of being able to play around with silly things. I generally play games to have fun, not pick one of four viable builds and do the same damn thing as everyone else...

I think some grinding is fine, such as for crafting resources and such.

But like you said, it's often excessive.
