Trump Admin Returns Russian Dissident Asylum Seekers to Putin

>Activists warn Russian political refugees against seeking asylum in the US

>Immigration and Customs Enforcement had put them on a circuitous route: after being picked up from an airport in Alexandria, Louisiana, they made stops in the Caribbean before moving onwards to Cairo, Egypt.

>From Cairo, a plane took them to Moscow.

>The episode has caused panic among Russian dissidents and exiles. Many of them fled the country in the years after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Thousands sought refuge in the U.S., telling immigration authorities that they fear imprisonment or persecution

I worry that he's just the worst president in US history so far. When somebody eventually takes the title from him, they're going to have to invent whole new categories of heinous, unpresidential shit to do. It'll take a real trailblazer.

Optimistic that you think we’re going to have a future to have presidents in

[–] betterdeadthanreddit@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Things are not great right now (to put it mildly) but I don't think it's the unrecoverable death-spiral that so many are hoping for. Time will tell.

if humans don't sort out their politics/economics within a generation, im afraid it really is the beginning of the end. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/aug/28/collapse-critical-atlantic-current-amoc-no-longer-low-likelihood-study

The research found that if carbon emissions continued to rise, 70% of the model runs led to collapse, while an intermediate level of emissions resulted in collapse in 37% of the models. Even in the case of low future emissions, an Amoc shutdown happened in 25% of the models.

Scientists have warned previously that Amoc collapse must be avoided “at all costs”. It would shift the tropical rainfall belt on which many millions of people rely to grow their food, plunge western Europe into extreme cold winters and summer droughts, and add 50cm to already rising sea levels.

Did you miss the election rigging and projecting that on the opposition?

Or subordinating media. Or their nurturing paramilitary groups to use like black shirts?

There is maybe one longshot chance in 2028 and we do not have leadership that can pull it off, still suckling at the teat of the establishment grooming newsom as the next weak sold out non reformer aristocrat to run on I am not the other guy offering empty platitudes not attacking the oligarchy or threatening their positions.

[–] betterdeadthanreddit@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Like I said, things aren't great. Sometimes I'll employ a little understatement. Hasn't been this bad yet in my lifetime but "USA Civil War II" hasn't gone hot yet (for better or for worse). This country needs to vomit those poisonous fucks out, I'm just hoping we don't choke on it in the process.

[–] hector@lemmy.today 1 points 4 days ago

It is not even going to be like a civil war, we would need organized opposition for that. This will be a Reign of Terror. Almost all one way persecution of an ever-expanding group of people. Unless of course they lose control in 2028 but that seems increasingly unlikely given the same , unpopular, and sold out establishment leadership still controls the opposition party. No ambition let alone any fight, not a single Challenger for house, or senate, or even the presidency when anointing a candidate that never breached 30% popularity with four months to go. We were offered no reform, no fight against the people openly screwing us. Same worsening Healthcare and Drug system, Silicon Valley tightening the screws, and so forth. Not even a single fucking issue. They did not personally call out a single company or their leadership in any strong way.

Not a chance any of them lead a campaign to protect Americans from getting hurt.

To be fair, Putin is also called President

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

Putin also might attack Europe and trigger a world war. Do you really believe that humanity would survive ww3 and still have presidents after that? Trump is working with and enabling Putin. I’m not trying to argue with you you’re correct on your point I was just giving my perspective.

“I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones”

[–] xyzzy@lemmy.today 1 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (2 children)

The second quote was from an anonymous young army lieutenant stationed at Bikini Atoll who interrupted a conversation among news correspondents there discussing the weapons of the next war. (He originally said spears.)

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

This is a good read. They investigate the origins. It was a common sentiment around ww2 and it was said frequently in different versions including by Einstein. https://quoteinvestigator.com/2010/06/16/future-weapons/

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Changed it still a good quote

[–] Boddhisatva@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Just wait for President Vance. While he won't have Trump's cult appeal, he'll be a good little soldier who will do exactly what his Project 2025 handlers and Peter Thiel want him to do. Trump is pushing America in the direction that fascists want it to go, but he's also thrashing around like a toddler and slowing the process down. Vance will be laser focused on the fascist handbook. I suspect that the House, Senate, and SCOTUS will still pave the way for him too. They've come too far on the path to turn aside now. The vast majority of them are not going to stand against the wind even without Trump's MAGAts lurking behind them with guns, knives, and nooses.

[–] hector@lemmy.today 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Vance will not end with supreme leader, he will be pushed aside by the base for a different asshole.

[–] Boddhisatva@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Not before he becomes president. There's no chance of Trump surviving his term. He'll die or he'll be pushed aside using the 25th Amendment and Vance will become president.

[–] hector@lemmy.today 1 points 4 days ago

He is definitely a shadow of his dickish self in 2020. She is running on auto dick at this point. Which changes nothing, the party is running the show which is even worse in a way.

But whether he remains propped up or not, 2028 might be our only chance to unseat these guys before they rig the elections to the point where they will forever remain in power. Vance will not end with it, not without a fight and he will not win that fight whether he inherits it or not.

The nest of vipers will see a bitter fight that could be our chance to take it from them if we had a popular reform alternative with some organization behind it, and some guts and muscle.

The Democrats are not that so disabuse yourself of the notion that Newsom.is acceptable. If he had what we needed he would have stood up in 2024 and claimed the nomination, and he could have won then. Not now.
