You underestimate how far the slightest ambiguities can be stretched and distorted.

I didn't think they're underestimating anything, I think they're pointing out that an absolute like this would be pretty devastating. Like if we applied this to medical equipment, it would be pretty terrible. And even if you made an exception for something like medical equipment, that's a regulated category of goods, and would still massively reduce the amount of waste produced, even if people used loopholes created by that exception.

Medical goods are a great example of a restricted case.

I'm being sardonic about capitalist corpo-brain: Plastic bottles are practically recyclable! But the fact is many aren't. We could recycle them but we would need both the facility and some virgin plastic to mix in. Facilities aren't widely available and virgin plastic comes from oil. But since they're practically recyclable they're A-OK!
