qBittorrent is pretty slick and yes VPN is preferred but it's not like this is going to have your isp banging at your door. You should be fine with double nat since the connection is more relying on the other person's ports being accessible.
You're the second person to recommend that client so that works for me. Thanks!
Consider me the third. It's open source and has become sort of the de facto default client for many folks unless there's some specific issue they have with it.
