One failed terrorist caused millions of passengers to have to stand on the nasty fucking floor where every other motherfucker is standing in their socks (or not) and now 25 years later we can leave our shoes on in selected airports.

The Jihadists definitely won.

So that asshole is still alive, sitting in ADX in Florence, CO

I hate you, Rick.

I swear to god this whole thing was a setup because they waited until the guy was literally in his seat on the plane trying to light his shoe on fire before arresting him rather than stopping him at any point prior to that.

Wikipedia says he was denied boarding the day prior? I know it's all security theater but they're also incompetent. It's really disgusting when those two intersect.

Maybe I'm thinking of the guy who had the liquid pouch and matches, who is the reason why I can't bring a bottle of water through security. I would Google it, but I don't want to end up on a list by searching those specific terms in this political climate.

I think i must be conflating different instances as I did do some googling and the "Underwear Bomber" most closely matches my (probably addled) recollection. However this guy wasn't arrested just before takeoff either, so that aspect must have been some instance that didnt gain as much notoriety and was lost in the news cycle.

They only won because republicans are idiots, and too many democrats who actively refuse to stop them are differently idiots.

A functioning political system cannot possibly be taken down by something like that. A little extra humane watchfulness and you're done.

Well, it wasn't really the failed terrorist that caused this. He was just the excuse that a security theatre based agency used. The real cause was a desire to increase funding by making up bullshit rules that don't really help anything except the bottom line of a few companies.

For a second I thought he had the same name as Mr Fantastic, Reed Richards, but it's just close.

Woah…is “Rick” short for “Richard?” Did I just not know this? Or am I just forgetting that I knew it?? Or are you wrong??? I kinda need to know

[–] rc__buggy@sh.itjust.works 2 points 17 hours ago

or for Rickarthy

[–] eRac@lemmings.world 2 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

Rich is short for Richard. Then, if you already have a Rich in your family, you swap the last letter out, making Rick. If you already have a Rick, swap the first letter out and you are now Dick.

After many years of everyone being named the same few names, the multiple-layers-removed options become valid shortenings even without conflict. Then they become names of their own.
