If you're like me, it's a great opportunity to ruin the family picnic with politics and pressuring maga relatives. Likely won't change any minds, but maybe I'll luck out and not get invited next year.

Yeah, patriotism always felt fucking weird as a kid growing up in the 90s.

9/11 ruined it for me, specifically the “proud to be an American”, flag on cars garbage—while we passed the Patriot act and started more wars.

Call it what it is: nationalism. I've been weirded out by it since I stopped saying the pledge of allegiance in elementary school.

Fun fact: the pledge was created as part of a campaign to sell more flags to schools.
