A switch away from US big-tech is great, but the switch should be made to something fundamentally better and more secure/privacy preserving IMO.

Not every single tool you might need will have a recommendation on this website, but some will and they're well researched and vetted alternatives that often perform better than the service you're replacing.

Hi all, I was browsing Madeinca.ca and realized that “web hosting” for me means VPS but means “here’s a Wordpress instance” to others.

I’m looking to host a basically nothing website - I just need to separate from my critical infrastructure. I see that Storm Web is $20/mo but I’m looking for $10 or under.

Any budget VPS recommendations?

Alternatives I Have Personally Tried And Liked

In Person Groceries > Basically anywhere but Walmart. Look for "Product of Canada" on packaging. "Made in Canada" is 2nd best. If the company is Canadian that is the 3rd best. For produce with no packaging ask someone at the store.

Ordering Groceries > Voila if you're not in BC, Save-On-Foods if you are in BC. I use Voila and it even has a shop Canadian tab.

Amazon > Home Hardware, Princess Auto, KMS Tools, BMR, and Lee Valley for in person shopping. If you're going to order online use the Canadian Tire App.

Google Drive > Sync. If anyone uses someone's referral code they both get 1 extra GB so here's mine. https://www.sync.com/?_sync_refer=181a30ae0

X > Mastadon / Bluesky

Netflix and Prime > Crave and CBC Gem

Disney Plus > Ahoy Matey, Sail the Seas

Uber Eats > Skip the Dishes

Burger King / Mcdonalds > Any of these companies https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Canadian_restaurant_chains

Starbucks / Mcdonalds Coffee > A local cafe or second Cup. Tim Hortons is owned by an American company.

Subway > Mr Sub

Shop local for clothes and shoes (but if you're tall like me, there is much more work to do to find tall clothes online).

What I'm Trying Next

Youtube Premium for my Smart TV > https://github.com/yuliskov/SmartTube (for PC just use Firefox with ublock origins)

Play Books For Audio Books > Libby with a library card

Amazon > https://www.singingpebblebooks.ca/ for physical books

Diary Queen > A local ice cream parlour. I have one down the street from me I might try.

I was researching Ontario's manufacturers and came across this list: https://www.dnb.com/business-directory/company-information.manufacturing.ca.ontario.html I'm going to do more research on individual companies listed, but I thought some of you may be interested as well.

First time posting here so I apologize in advance if I did something wrong.

I have an inherited contact sensitivity to alcohol, but my former alcohol-free mouthwash is 1000% USA corporation owned, made and marketted. I simply cannot find an alcohol-free substitute: help!

Hit me with your suggestions. We have kiddos. Make everything scratch. Chocolate chips are almost essential.

Just note that many of these products are "Made in Canada", not "Product of Canada", so ingredients likely still come from outside of the country.

Still better than the alternative retailers and brands.

American corporations like Facebook, Google, and Amazon make billions from weaponizing your private data. And you don't even have to be using their products for them to steal from you!

Rob them of that option by blocking ads and trackers.

Starve these bastards of your data, and you'll kill their revenue.

Who are some of your favourite Canadian authors? Remember to share the author's website if available, instead of an Amazon link. Your local library may have a lot of Canadian books too!

I saw a Silverwing book by Kenneth Oppel at a clearance sale and that took me on a nostalgia train. Looked him up and I didn't realize he's quite a prolific Canadian author!

Not sure if its all YA/easy reading, but that's what I grew up with. Both the Silverwing series and Airborn are top notch for that sorta thing and still hold up well for a re-read occassionally.

This is a great alternative to Apple / Google maps for public transit takers. Generally speaking their data is a lot better for service issues, rerouted lines, and the actual time of arrival for transit vehicles. Many transit authorities in Canada actually offer the premium subscription for this app, for free, to frequent riders AND the app is developed locally (in Québec)

If you're just looking for general maps however I highly suggest Open Street Map, or the Organic Maps app on Android (which uses OSM data). While they aren't explicitly Canadian, they get you away from American tech conglomerates and give back ownership of data to you, the user!

Amazon is officially dead to me, I had uninstalled all the apps a little while ago and deleted my email address today. It however hit me that I had not signed out of the webpage, so instead of just signing out I deleted my account and wow did it feel good saying I have issues with amazon when deleting the account and being signed out.

I am transferring all of my email address; a few years back it took me months to figure out what was all going to my gmail account that was used signing up for stuff even though there was some web app I used, I was going to move away from the Google as much as possible, minus search and YouTube. Several months ago I moved away from Google search, and was stuck with YouTube as there is no real competition to it, that my favourite channels use, so I am stuck with it.

So iCloud’s hide my email was the replacement for Gmail, it was a lot easier to cancel junk mail by being able to just turn off email addresses that started spamming me. Come now to the buy Canadian stuff I am turning off all my hide my email addresses and moving some to proton pass, most of the emails so far I can just delete but many I have to go to the webpage and change the address. It is hard work and I have given myself a deadline of the end of the month when my iCloud subscription is done and dusted. Only 152 email addresses left!

I have s dilemma when it comes to some brands.

For example Kraft or Scott paper are American companies. That means any profits go to the U.S.

However, their products are manufactured in Canada with canadian resources. Therefore helping the local economy and creating jobs.

Should we buy from them or no?

I world lean towards no, because in the end it profits americans. Especially when there are local alternatives for things like peanut butter, Cheez Whiz, and it's not like mac n cheese is really that hard to make. There are also local paper brands. But I'm still worried this could end in job losses and have an impact on the economy.

EDIT: I should also add that we're still being screwed royally by Canadian corporations still, like our large grocery chains, telecom and others. I think it's still worth to boycott them. That means we really need to focus on the very local businesses. They may cost more, but I think in the end we're definitely all going to be winners from doing that.
