Sorry guys, i'm the one who wished computers would become popular back when i was an awkward preteen in the 90's. Oops.

AMD fucked up hard by discontinuing 5700/5800X3D

[–] Dagnet@lemmy.world 21 points 1 day ago

I fucked up by not buying a 5700X3D

[–] db2@lemmy.world 34 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I should sell my machine for more than I paid, I don't mind dropping back to AM3+/DDR3 if it means I can spec a replacement later and make some extra money on top of it.

I have an old blade server that I got from work many years ago. I never set it up but just opened it up to see what's in it and discovered it had DDR2 memory. Interested?

AM3+ is straight ass though. There is a reason why most people who had a high end rig 10 years ago ran intel cpus.

Guess it was good I jumped on the 5700 X3D when I was able to.

Wonder what 3 series sells for... 3700X, etc.

[–] lemming741@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

I sold a 3700x for $75 on marketplace two weeks ago

I really dodged the bullet by upgrading my aging 2600X with an 5950X and filling the memory banks to 64GB on my AM4 platform half a year ago, I really hope that the current price level entices a few new players to enter the market.

Unfortunately, RAM production is not something you start up on a whim. There are only a few players and adding new capacity is a very long process. They won't do that unless they're convinced that the market will still be there in a couple of years.

[–] Onsotumenh@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 1 day ago

From what I've read the additional capacity that's currently on the way will come 27-28, tho if the bubble keeps growing that won't be nearly enough. Further capacity will take even longer...
I just hope that random economist whose name I don't remember is right and it is just the tp-hoarding-phase. When the panic buying stops and stock can recover somewhat, prices will go down to higher than before but more reasonable level.

I bought some RAM about 6 months ago. It costs me $299AUD for 64Gb, the same set from the same store is now $1,399. That’s an insane increase.

[–] G0rb@infosec.pub 8 points 1 day ago

2 x 48 GB Crucial 6200 DDR5 RAM in April for 310€, now it's 1.290€. Totally insane.

[–] ulterno@programming.dev 15 points 2 days ago

Makes sense, considering DDR4 has only gone up 2x.
Though now I need to but the motherboard sooner than later, lest there be no good stock by the time I get to it.

And here I was thinking id just upgrade to one of these on my AM4 board... guess not.

[–] jaykrown@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago

This is the kind of weird stuff that happens near the peak of a bubble.

[–] whosepoopisonmybuttocks@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

This is a weird post. 5800x3d might be "legacy" but other am4 chips are still being manufactured.

An AM4 computer is still pretty capable.

[–] P13@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 1 day ago

So glad I don’t have money for a new PC for some years anyways 😂

[–] TheGrandNagus@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

AM4 is the greatest CPU socket that has ever been created.

The fact some shitty athlons were sold on it, but also something like a 5800X3D that has held up so well that some people are still willing to pay this much years later is astonishing to me.

[–] ColeSloth@discuss.tchncs.de 10 points 1 day ago

Jokes on them I just ordered a used r 5 5600x for a $140 upgrade. My shits old as dirt. I was on a 1600x and a 1060 GPU.

[–] cley_faye@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

People a week ago: "you're all stupid, DDR4 is not impacted"

Just wait. Scarcity loves company.

[–] M0oP0o@mander.xyz 9 points 1 day ago

I love my AM4 5800X3D system. Paired with a 6900 XT (nice card) and 64 gigs of ram there is nothing it can't run for me. I have played with newer gen stuff and its all worse (ether bad linux support, stability, or the hardware cooks itself).

I honestly wonder if this shift away from consumer facing products has something to do with the plateauing of hardware as much as chasing a quick buck. I would think that if AMD just restarted 5800X3D production people would be happy.

[–] m3t00@piefed.world 5 points 2 days ago

built a dual athlon. think it was on a tyan mb. remember it needed ec, maybe ddr

[–] hornedfiend@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 day ago

I orderes a new 5700x 2 days ago fearing they might vanish forever as there are probably only stocks left.

I had one added for around 2 weeks in my amazon cart, but over here, in Spain, they went out of stock meanwhile, so I managed to order one from pccomponentes.com and I'm glad I did.

I still get to keep my 32 Gb DDR4 for a couple more years, hopefully.

I guess my overheating 3800X is going to have to last a few more years...
