Donald Trump has sparked a fresh row with Denmark after appointing a special envoy to Greenland, the vast Arctic island he has said he would like to annex.

In response to a question from the BBC about the new role of Jeff Landry, the Republican governor of Louisiana, Trump said the US needed Greenland for "national protection" and that "we have to have it".

Landry, he said, would "lead the charge" as special envoy to Greenland, a semi-autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark.

The move has angered Copenhagen, which said it would call the US ambassador for "an explanation". Greenland's prime minister said the island must "decide our own future" and its "territorial integrity must be respected".

Gov Landry said in a post on X that it was an honour to serve in a "volunteer position to make Greenland a part of the US".

Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has revived his long-standing interest in Greenland, citing its strategic location and mineral wealth.

He has refused to rule out using force to secure control of the island, a stance that has shocked Denmark, a Nato ally that has traditionally enjoyed close relations with Washington.

"We'll have to work that out," Trump added. "We need Greenland for national security, not minerals."

Trump specifically mentioned Chinese and Russian ships as potential threats in the nearby seas.

We need Greenland

No we don't. We really don't. We need a better, more affordable healthcare system, we need more affordable housing, we need to achieve true, sustainable energy independence by transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources, and we desperately need our electrical and other infrastructure to be updated, we need walkable, public transit focused cities that people actually want to, and can afford to live in, that are also sustainable and environmentally resilient. We NEED those things, and more. We don't need Greenland.

Also Greenland is Danish. As in, you know, NATO member Denmark? Your ally?

[–] Typhoon@lemmy.ca 12 points 18 hours ago

The US has shown it has no allies.

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 28 points 1 day ago (3 children)

This is total bullshit by Trump, Denmark/Greenland has allowed American military bases on Greenland since the 50's.
Denmark has been among USA's strongest allies, and helped USA even in Iraq despite it being a very controversial invasion.and is (was?) a member of 7 eyes.
No doubt if USA needed to expand in Greenland it could have been negotiated just fine.
Trump Claiming USA needs Greenland for security is complete bullshit.

Next Trump will claim USA needs Venezuela and Canada for security purposes!!
Trump is a criminal, and being president of the USA, USA behaves like a criminal.

TLDR:
Fuck Trump, and fuck USA for electing him.

[–] Jesus_666@lemmy.world 13 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Yes, but by threatening Denmark, Trump can make it so that the USA no longer get to have military bases on Greenland while also driving the narrative that more guns are needed, which no doubt makes some of his buddies very happy.

His behavior makes a lot more sense if you don't assume he has his country's best interests in mind.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 4 points 20 hours ago

Yep. His behavior makes complete sense if you assume he actively wants to harm Americans.

Nothing happens accidentally - there's a bigger catastrophe the upper class is hedging against, and it's not just murica LLC.

I sincerely believe they flipped the numbers at the tabulation level and we didn't elect this fool. They were so loud about election interference that the cowardly "progressives" don't dare bring it up because they might be made fun of. Cowardice is our problem.

Maybe Global Warming?

I remember you writing this long apologia for trump and Stein voters. "Oh those people were manipulated, totally not their fault." Seems you changed your tune.

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago) (1 children)

You must be mistaking me for someone else, and I find your comment offensive!! 👎

I was always against Trump, and Trump voters were voting against their own interest. I NEVER apologized for Trump voters, they are ultimately the main symptom of the problem! They are idiots and most of them probably psychopaths that are unable to see that Trump is a malignant narcissist. Just about the worst personality possible for a president, only second to JD Vance.
They may have been manipulated, but it is impossible to be manipulated to that degree without being willingly manipulated. Nobody can be so stupid they don't realize on some level that Trump is evil!! This was obvious already first time Trump was elected.

It may have been someone responding to me, because I'm generally pretty harsh and unapologetic towards Trump voters.
What you have seen is more likely me calling the American society mentally ill, which is something I've pointed out numerous times here.

I've also pointed out that voting Jill Stein is just as bad as voting Republican. As it is specifically designed to take votes away from Democrats, just like they attempted with RFK. Jill Stein is an ally of Putin, and a traitor to everything associated with being green. And traditional American values for that matter, just like Trump.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 2 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Okay, well if what you say is true then there was definitely a misunderstanding somewhere because I tagged you as "forgiving of trump voters". Maybe you were feeling particularly generous that day and I ran further with that than you meant it.

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 2 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago) (1 children)

No way, I may have been forgiving towards Americans that voted Democratic, absolutely not Trump voters or Jill Stein voters.
It remains incomprehensible and reprehensible to me how people can vote for either of those two.
I am personally sanctioning American goods and services, and I blame USA as a society for Trump.
But of Americans with voting rights, the ones that voted Democratic are not to blame for Trump.

PS: How do you "tag" people on Lemmy?

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 3 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

All sounds reasonable to me. It disgusts me that the culture I grew up in was so insidious as to produce trump. Still hard to fathom, even knowing about the cultural problems we have...

Some of the mobile apps have the tagging feature. I use boost on Android which also has it. You basically just long press a username and select "tag user".

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Thanks, I use the "normal" browser interface. Never used an app for lemmy, maybe I should try it?

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 2 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

I would recommend a mobile app, yes. Just feels a little more solid and to me the notifications, video play and a few other features feel smoother on a native app. Boost is great but I wouldn't necessarily recommend the free version because it has ads. No ads in the $5 version which I found worth it because it's a great app.

There are a lot of other choices (https://join-lemmy.org/apps/) but I definitely tried a lot and liked Boost and Connect the best. Sync is okay and I've heard good things about Voyager. Most of the apps have a user tagging feature and I'm certain the ones I've mentioned here do. Only caveat is in Connect it's called "Notes" instead of tags, but it's the same idea. Hope this helps!

Thanks. 👍

Trump specifically mentioned Chinese and Russian ships as potential threats in the nearby seas.

Your fucking "secret" alliance is the reason you have to have Greenland for security? Because you're so slick, nobody can see you're almost certainly playing both sides? Fucking snake in the grass.

Landry is a military veteran and former police officer who was a US Congressman and Louisiana's attorney general before being elected governor in 2023. He said his new role would not affect his duties as governor.

Ask him what happened to suddenly end his career as a police officer? Long before he was breaking international laws by invading the snowy landscape of Greenland, a bunch of cocaine stolen from an evidence locker was found stashed under the floor boards of Sneaux White's home. Then he made a video about it when he ran for AG to try to make it less weird...

Doing the Right Thing

It takes courage to do the right thing, especially when doing the right thing calls for placing the rule of law above all else. ❄️❄️❄️❄️

“Either Jeff Landry was a dirty cop and knew about the drugs, or he was the worst cop ever and couldn’t figure out that $10,000 worth of cocaine was being sold out of his house.”

And all Americans who let this happen.

  • The ones who voted for him.
  • The ones who don’t give a shit.
  • And the ones who know better and continue to watch him burn their country down.
[–] lemmylump@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

International pressure needs to step the fuck up.

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 10 points 13 hours ago

Yeah and Greenland needs Trump to fuck off. So does everyone on earth, including us Americans.

[–] DaddleDew@lemmy.world 5 points 22 hours ago

What the US needs is the support of its allies. And it is losing it fast.

[–] CheeseNoodle@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Honestly letting the US get a taste of expantionism seems incredibly dangerous, if it comes down to a shooting war over greenland we should cover that shit in so many landmines that they make up a higher a higher percentage of the top soil than actual soil.
