Figure out the tone and then learn how to whistle the same tone, but phase inverted. Should cancel out the tinnitis if you have good lung capacity and practice cyclical breathing.

Nothing, historically. There are newer trials going on and at least one FDA-approved device in the USA that involves putting some object in your mouth for like 30 minutes a day.

Short answer: Get an evaluation by an audiologist, if possible.

Long answer: Depending on the personal cause of tinnitus, solutions range from nothing to getting hearing aids with specific software that provides tinnitus relief. I have moderate to severe hearing loss in higher frequencies and have very noticeable tinnitus. The complications from hearing loss with tinnitus can vary, but personally were resulting in increased sensitivity to noise throughout the day, irritability, and diminished ability to communicate (I couldn't hear what my spouse or kids were saying when there was any kind of background noise present). It led me to never want to go anywhere or do anything outside our home because I couldn't hear or enjoy anything.

I went to an audiologist, had a bunch of tests, and was prescribed a set of hearing aids. Said hearing aids play soft ocean noises in addition to boosting the frequencies I have diminished hearing in. The ocean noises allow the brain to train itself to treat the tinnitus as a routine background noise instead of a panic inducing "danger" sound. Over time, it has helped in significantly reducing my attention to the tinnitus. It will never go away, and I have to sleep with ocean sounds playing so I don't go insane.

DON’T do headphones in bed to compensate! it’s not the volume, it’s the exposure!

i’ve got bad tinnitus that i made worse with sleepytime audio over a few years. started just playing shit from my phone speaker instead and it stopped progressing entirely, now i’m just at an uncomfortable plateau lmao

day to day stuff is harder to give advice for. i only noticed in the past few years that i’m almost constantly “listening to music” in my head. i reckon that’s probably a coping strategy.

ways to prevent it getting worse are the stupid stuff you’ve already heard: avoid loud noises, be mindful of music volume, etc. BUT one minor thing that you might not consider: go for on/over ear headphones rather than in-ear buds, ESPECIALLY for extended listening. also consider open back sets, if your setup allows it. the perfect seal that earbuds achieve makes for more stress on those tiny sound-detecting hairs you got, even at lower relative volumes!

big thing to remember is once the damage is there, it’s easier to make worse, so you gotta be proactive. lucky thing is it’s actually really easy to be proactive! i’m a concert-guy myself, and i’ve managed to prevent my shit from getting worse while still regularly attending concerts! acoustically tuned earbuds are super fucking great and totally not a gimmack. i use those loop ones, but anything with positive reviews will probably serve you fine.

good luck comrade

I already and for a long time have only pretty much used wearable, even more innocuous than the ones you mentioned (dont even know where the heck my airpods went lol)

Try this finger snapping on back of skull. Note: caffeine can make tinnitus worse, cut back if you are drinking a pot of coffee and you may find it less noticable. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyT9ZwWy5Jc

I have a teabag in a giant thermos, i dont think its caffeine. Interestingly, been of Adderall a while and I dont tend to notice this kind of thing when it take that

Don't ignore what the last person just told you. Do this. I have tinnitus too, and it's the only thing that has ever quieted it. Try it.

Will try thanks, I downloaded it so will practice it more times

[–] frankenswine@lemmy.world 3 points 18 hours ago

it's either stress induced or due to long exposure of high sound levels. or both.

sounds works in logarithms, so if you are exposed to double rhe intensity (just +3dB), you need twice as long to recover from that. if you work in loud (think: noisy) environments make sure to wear protection (stuff in ears or active noise cancelling).

if it is not due to permanent hearing damage it will vanish but it will take time

Try not to think of it. Pop an AirPod in when you go to bed and play an audiobook or something.

(Edit: AirPod at the absolute minimum volume.)

Been dealing with tinnitus my whole life and the best thing you can do, in my experience, is mask it.

modern airpods might be better for it, but seriously watch out for your condition getting worse. i used earbuds to sleep for a number of years and my tinnitus kept getting worse until i started using a speaker instead.

maybe it’s different per person, but it’s advice i give anyone with tinnitus now just in case hahah

Good call. I have gen2 AirPods and I keep the volume to the minimum setting. Hard to tell if anything is getting worse since I have had it for as long as I can remember.
