Last I heard the democrats caved. I blame both parties. We need to clean both houses.

[–] zd9@lemmy.world 48 points 3 days ago (1 children)

In general, corporatists on both sides are disgusting. However, Democrats as a whole have been fighting for this for a long time, so it's like 85% Republicans' fault (who enjoy starving children to get others to bow down to them), and maybe 15% Democrats.

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 3 days ago (5 children)

I mean, sure. But corporate democrats have been fighting for what amounts to a band-aid on a system that is bleeding out and needs 50 stitches and hospitalization while the conservatives are basically fighting for shooting the patient in the head to end their misery.

Sure, they've been fighting for better than the Republicans have, but... that's not a whole lot better. Medical costs have been one of the top reasons for bankruptcy for literally decades now. Michael Moore's film "Sicko" came out in 2007, (when it had been a problem fr a long time already) almost 20 years ago, and the ACA has barely moved the needle on medical bankruptcies. I'm not saying the ACA is bad, I'm saying it's never been close to enough, and we need to stop patting democrats on the back for sucking up to the corporate stooges that fund them to give us half-ass solutions.

Once again, sure, it's better than the bullet in the brain that the Republicans want to give people like myself, whose medical costs without insurance are over $18k a month. But other countries literally don't let the pharmaceutical companies gouge their citizens like this to begin with, nor do they allow medical insurance companies to make profit from denying care. Those are purely American issues, and ones that the democrats consistently bend over for corporate interests to leave on the table instead of going as far as they can to make sure people like me aren't stuck in financial limbo because of a disease I didn't ask for and certainly didn't do anything to get, just that random ass cancer in my forties that was unpreventable.

I'm glad for not having a bullet in my brain, but let's not pretend we can't ask for better than what the democrats offer.

while the conservatives are basically fighting for shooting the patient in the head to end their misery.

More like after they are actively cutting open the patient to steal and sell their organs while still alive

But yeah we agree on the rest. Most of the political class in general are just trying to hoard as much wealth and power as possible. However there are a handful of Democrats that are actually fighting for complete system overhaul, and that's more than you can say about Republicans at least.

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Voting is key. People could have taken the ACA as the new normal and voted progressive so we could start moving to something more progressive. Instead we voted regressive.

Can never seem to shift society at all left before it gets shoved hard right again

[–] fodor@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 days ago

Again, you confused "all democrats" with "corporate democrats". Please be careful! There is a difference between a leftist and a corporate lackey, and if you can't see it, you will keep getting played for the rest of your life.

I just watched a 60 Minutes story last night about new DNA drugs that can cure these exotic diseases with a SINGLE treatment, but that treatment is millions of dollars. Rich people can get it, because they'll simply pay, but insurance companies are routinely denying them, of course.

These are a new type of drug, and they've been under development for a long time, and they are just coming to market, so the demand for these drugs is just beginning, and will definitely grow.

They spoke to the CEO of a small insurance company that was faced with a patient, a baby, who needed a new drug, but it cost so much that it would literally bankrupt the company, especially if they had multiple patients. Without the drug, she'd be dead by age 2. He didn't want to deny it, but the pharmaceutical company was charging so much he didn't have a choice but to deny. Instead, he personally led the charge to raise money, lobby the pharma company, etc., and finally convinced Medicaid to pay it.

The little girl mostly recovered, and is now getting straight As. Unfortunately, by the time she got treatment, she had permanently lost the use of her legs, and will be in a wheelchair for the rest of her life. Had they not dicked around, and got her treatment the minute it was diagnosed, she'd be a normal kid, but she was victimized by our healthcare system, who at first decided to let her die for profit.

Oh yeah, they also spoke with the Pharma CEO, and he was as much a psychopath as you'd expect, patiently explaining how expensive it is to create these drugs, so they have to charge accordingly, as much as it pains him, while not mentioning that this drug will also be available to patients in most other countries for free. Only Americans seem to have to bear the cost of developing drugs that benefit the entire world.

We create it, manufacture it, sell it, but we also have to pay for it, and we can't have it, while the rest of the world benefits.

It’s the wealthy…the Republicans, the Democrats…they are just public facing representatives of a democratic system that was long ago usurped. The wealthy gained enough control in both parties to completely control the agenda of each branch of government. Total regulatory capture. You can’t really democracy your way out of that. I’m all for trying, but they’ll always do what they did to Bernie, and if it starts to look like you’ll actually win and enact real change, they’ll do what they did to MLK/JFK/RFK/Fred Hampton.

[–] Zachariah@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Do you also blame the voters, the media, and the churches?

[–] Quexotic@infosec.pub 6 points 3 days ago

Oh indeed, but with a refinement. Only the churhes that embody the phrase "there is no hate like Christian love".

The rest, I hold blameless.

[–] fodor@lemmy.zip 5 points 3 days ago

Yes and no. You can say that, but only if you actually clarify what you mean. Some Democrats and leftists have always been pushing national health care.

[–] sturmblast@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Eventually... we need to take care of the current fascist regime first

[–] devolution@lemmy.world 18 points 3 days ago (2 children)

If darkies get health care then Amerikkka doesn't deserve health care.

  • Conservatives
[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

That's really what much of the conservative agenda boils down to.

I'm honestly surprised they didn't spike the GI Bill over deep concerns about how the "undeserving" (Blacks) might have benefited, too. Turns out they worked very hard to withhold those benefits from Blacks, but didn't nuke the whole thing.

I wouldn't be surprised to see similar things happen if Taco were to somehow fall ass-back into single payer (he was talking like a single payer advocate last week, whether he knew it or not, LOL) - whites get the benefits, POC get zillions of hurdles and excuses, at least as a general rule.

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago

They didn't have a choice. As FDR said, "The New Deal is the only option that America has to prevent socialism from taking root in the US for the next 100 years." It was absolutely a threat to the GOP, but he knew it for the bandaid that it was.

The GOP didn't listen, and have successfully torn the whole thing down in a mere 80 years, and democratic socialism looks pretty good to well over 70% of the US, they just won't agree with that label. The policies they will.

[–] Someonelol@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 days ago

I'd love for a facetious politician to introduce a bill that has universal healthcare but only for white citizens, just to see how popular it would actually be among the GOP crowd.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 13 points 3 days ago

I think they take health policy when it comes to themselves quite seriously. Even at the very lowest echelons of the conservative base.

They just don't want any of those people (usually Blahs and brown people) getting any "free stuff". And they want to define the terms for the health care that women get.

[–] mtpender@piefed.social 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

"Fuck the poor!"

  • The Republican Party
[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Fuck everyone except Israel, corporations and billionaires. Especially women and brown people

-the Republican Party

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I blame Trump for all the shit he's made wrong with our country right now.

[–] PunnyName@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

And the systems / people who propped him up.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

2009 they were waving sheets of paper at Obama they called "The Republican Health Care Plan".

On examination, the sheets were blank.

https://youtu.be/-usmvYOPfco

Nothing has changed.

[–] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 2 points 2 days ago

Yeah. McCain's veto to kill the ACA was based on Republicans having to provide their plan while getting rid the ACA instead of after.

It turns out that getting rid of the ACA was the plan.

[–] SnarkoPolo@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

But but this is the Greatest Country In The World! Why would someone want to be a doctor if they can't be multimillionaires?

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

Hate to say it but blaming doctors is another part of class war. Let’s blame everything on high doctor salaries so insurance companies, PBMs, pharmaceutical research companies, etc can still make huge profits at the cost of the most expensive healthcare system in the workd

[–] angband@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

the law seems to deliberately and seriously raise the profits of insurance companies, in a non-random fashion. so the "seriously" part just makes them giggle, I am sure. chuck schumer too.

[–] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Republicans? .... they were to blame a decade or two ago.

Ever since then, all of America is to blame.

[–] fodor@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 days ago

Speak for yourself. Many Americans have worked for decades to advance national health care.

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Republicans have been seriously dismantling any consumer protections or regulations in the healthcare industry and every other industry for decades

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 1 points 19 hours ago

It's not about taking it seriously. They are ideologically opposed to any government service that benefits people who work for a living. That money could be used to line the pockets of rich donors. Why in the hell would they want to spend it on us poors?

[–] billbasher@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

We need universal healthcare
