The British government threatened to defund the international criminal court and leave the Rome statute that set it up if it pressed ahead with plans to issue an arrest warrant against Benjamin Netanyahu, the ICC’s prosecutor, has claimed.

Karim Khan made the allegation in a submission to the court defending his decision to prosecute Israel’s prime minister.

Khan does not name the individual who made the threats, saying the call on 23 April 2024 was with a British official, but reports have suggested the caller may have been the then British foreign secretary, David Cameron. Khan said the official had argued that issuing arrest warrants against Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant, the former Israeli defence minister, was disproportionate.

The thing that's crazy here, and that imo clearly shows that this is a 100% political, manipulative move, is that it's a court. They don't just grab people and declare people guilty or flip coins or something. A trial can end in a "not guilty" verdict. That's the point.

There is only one reason to threaten a court: if you already know beyond any doubt that whoever is accused of something is guilty AND you don't like the outcome and consequences of a guilty verdict.

The important part, is Britian bitched out on their threat...

The wealthy and powerful make empty threats constantly, because if/when it works, it's a free victory.

We can't negotiate with the wealthy, which should be obvious by 2025 to anyone that can remember the past twenty years.

I do love me some Bob Vylan! My wife likes their lyrics, but not the music that much.

You could also sanction a court if it was a kangaroo or otherwise corrupt court, like US immigration "courts".

Why does Israel have so many bitches?

They're like geopolitical pimps.

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 18 points 22 hours ago

Because Israel is a fascist nation, and many modern countries are run by authoritarians who will gladly line up to test new weapons on brown people and hide behind accusations of antisemitism whenever someone calls out Israel for their genocide

[–] MrScottyTay@sh.itjust.works 9 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Because they are THE product of geopolitics. They should know it more than any other country

This. Basically if you say Colonization is wrong, that mean you admit all European colonized country are wrong, this includes Canada, and Australia for example. These people have a hard time admitting their crimes.

Because having at least one country committing war crimes against civilians keeps "war crimes against civilians" on the table

[–] MiddleAgesModem@lemmy.world 3 points 13 hours ago

Britain in particular might have difficulty reconciling that they made promises to everybody that directly conflicted with each other.

[–] Zombie@feddit.uk 26 points 1 day ago

This appears to have been under the previous Conservative government.

However, with the actions of the current Labour government against pro-Palestine groups and supporters it wouldn't surprise me if they are doing similar.

Westminster is full of scumbags. Scottish independence can't come fast enough. Fuck the union, fuck this racist, classist, moralless, support of genocide. Fuck the intimidation of war crimes prosecutors. David Cameron should be prosecuted as an accessory to genocide for doing so.

"They're trying to undermine a foundation of western civilization by persecuting genocide and war crimes."

If you're defending the criminals, then you too are a criminal

Canada is threatened by the US, the UK PM says nothing, and he cannot stop licking Trump's nutsack every chance he gets. It's an embarrassing betrayal.

[–] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 2 points 21 hours ago

Does Trump have an arrest warrant yet?
