I know this is uplifting news but that picture raises my bile. I would rather see those thieves impaled on that horn.

Edit: In case it's not obvious, I didn't read the article before commenting. I saw the image and was unhappy with how it made me feel so I didn't read the article at that time. If you read the article the context is this is dehorning to reduce the incidence of poaching. Still the image is distressing if you don't have the context.

sure it's thieves? I thought it was vets removing horns so nobody comes to kill the rhino

Regardless of the motivation it's still awful to consider. Poachers will kill dehorned rhinos to avoid wasting time tracking them again. Another comment posted an article on the practice and how it's efficacy is debated.

I get it. It still makes me irritated and the picture lacks that context.

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The context is right under the photo. It literally says what they're doing and why.

I was commenting about the preview image in app.

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You expect a lot of context out of a preview image do you?

[–] syreus@lemmy.world -1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I expect preview images to not be distressing in a community called uplifting news. Don't be dense.

Example Headline: Cure for Childhood Leukemia Discovered

Example Preview Image: Dead children

Me: Well that really kills my mood.

Enlightened Lemming: It makes sense when you read the article. 🤓

People fighting against filthy poachers is certainly uplifting to me. Maybe not to people like you.

[–] syreus@lemmy.world -1 points 1 day ago

You seem to misunderstand me and frankly I don't much care to help you work through it.

In 1970s elementary school we had a children's book showing a decapitated rhino with its horn hacked off. First time kid?

[–] syreus@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That's rough. Sad to hear how poorly your generation had it with all the lead paint and cigarette smoke. Do you miss the taste of DDT?

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world -5 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Yeah, we had plenty of bad spots, but we didn't shrivel up and cry over a dead rhino. We had the problem dumped right in our lap. No, "Goodness! Children shouldn't see such things!" We are all well aware.

And BTW, GenX eliminated lead paint, asbestos, and cigarettes (in America, smoke on Europe!). Another 10 years of DDT and we could have wiped malaria of the face of the Earth, but the US said, "We got it under control! Fuck the rest of y'all. And BTW, we won't trade with anyone using DDT." 10-years and malaria could be extinct. Fuck Racheal Carlson. Silent Spring killed more humans than Hitler.

[–] syreus@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Im quite greatful for the environmental reforms that took place. If only your generation wasn't indirectly responsible for the host of other issues we are dealing with right now.

Imagine knowing what we do now about DDT and defending it's use. I encourage you to read up on DDT resistance. Silent spring caused a lot of people to over-react and the culture it spawned created other issues but look at the levels of PFAS in our water supplies worldwide. We learned nothing.

I'm old. My back hurts. It's not my first time seeing a dehorned rhino. It will still make me pissed to see it every time. I'll appreciate not being faced with it in a place called uplifting news. I read these posts to improve my mood. Capisce?

I hate these triple negative headline. Lose ... overturn ... ban. So its banned, Namibia wants it unbaned but failed? There must be a better way to phrase that

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 3 points 14 hours ago

Thank you! I had to read it three times to be sure I understood

[–] milk@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The article does a good job to show both perspectives but I have to imagine that flooding the market with rhino horn would reduce poaching since poaching is surely quite expensive. The extra revenue could be used for conservation too.

[–] Chais@sh.itjust.works 1 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Use the money you got from killing rhinos to save the ones you didn't kill yet? Sounds like a stupid, losing bet.

[–] milk@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 16 hours ago

You're dehorning them anyway. Not to mention that South Africa apparently has 30 tonnes of horn lying around
